Trakka Owners

Since none of us have a wiring diagram for the Trakka conversion, I have been pulling a lot of stuff out to try to generate a diagram that we can all use.  I am getting close to feeling that I shouldn't have started!

The entire vehicle has been wired with the same black/black-green dual core wire and calling it a rat's nest would be very derogatory of the average rat!  Splitters have been used in may places and it is clear that the wiring was put in first and the cabinetry after, because there is no manipulation room in a lot of places.

Another curious find is two dual core runs going up inside the RH air intake.  What is curious is that I have found only one dual core going up the sleeve into the roof.  Since the only need for power in the pop top is the fluro, it's difficult to imagine what the other one is for.

I will tidy it up as I go along but it will be slow work.  I am tracing wires by the only method possible - inserting sewing needles through the insulation in order to make voltage or continuity measurements.  Don't expect a definitive result any time soon.

Mine has a Cobra alarm fitted and I think that it might have been standard on the Gold Pak.  Can anyone confirm that?

There are two dual core runs from behind the fridge, up the passage between the seats, under the mat in the passenger's foot well and disappearing behind the fuse panel.  Behind the fuse panel are other curious objects, like a relay handing loose amongst the wires and a bus bar.  Haven't got near enough to them yet to determine what they might be.  They might or might not be associated with the alarm.

Gday Les,

I bet you wish you were 20 years younger haha.

One needs the flexibility of Houdini to penetrate the nooks and crannies
to trace wires and connectors, it's no laughing matter eh ... as I so
painfully remember. All the more depressing when the wiring methodology
is exposed for all to be incredulous about.

See if you can get at and check out the condition of the micro
switch/connectors under and at the back of the sink that operates the
cold water tap. I found the wires to the connectors were left hanging,
the weight of the wires swinging about lasted just long enough for me to
touch them and the micro switch connectors disintegrated. It'd be a
lovely pickle to have that happen a long way from home.

If I was inspired enough, probably I could write a book about the Trakka
wiring system. Well if I was a masochist that is.

Cheers.

Ken

Ken,

At my age, make that 40 years younger!!

The wiring methodology puts me in mind of the output of a cross-eyed chimpanzee high on pot, but I didn't want to say that until I found that you viewed it in a similar way.

There are a lot of splitters in a lot of wires, which has the effect of turning the system into one multi-branch and completely inseparable wire!  I will put in terminal blocks as appropriate so that individual pieces can be removed, repaired, etc.

My microswitches appear to be in good condition, which is a relief given the inaccessibility of the taps on the sink.  In fact, you have given me an idea by mentioning your encounter with them.  It would make good sense to provide an access hole beside each one.  They could be closed with any of several marine ...  can't think of the name of those beaut little plastic access devices that open with half a turn....someone tell me the right name.  With the driver's seat forward, this would allow direct access to the wiring and microswitch for each tap.  Good idea, Ken, thanks for that.

I will leave the book part of it to you.

.

Phill,

Wait until I have finished with the sewing needles and the tracing process and I will get back to you.  Was a Trakka fitting or an aftermarket?

Cobra used their own installers.

Phill
Les, I understand the Cobra alarm system was not a standard inclusion on
any level of Trakka conversion, but it was an optional extra for any
level of conversion. Makes sense as Phill says, they would have had
Cobra do the install whenever ordered by a customer. Cheers.

Well you wouldn't want Trakka doing any complex wiring, would you?

Phill
Phill,

Very good point.  Bring on the drunken monkeys!
