Thanks Les. I still cant open attachments despite trying all sorts of things my end.
From memory the spare goes to the rear passenger
rear passenger goes to front passenger
front passenger goes to rear driver
rear driver to front driver
and front driver to spare.

Can you confirm if this is the sequence in the attachment?

It is a Microsoft Word XP Pro 2003 document.

If you are using Vista or 7, it should open.

What OS and office programmes are you using?

A 5-tire rotation would go as follows:

  • right rear to right front
  • right front to spare
  • spare to left rear
  • left rear to left front
  • left front to right rear

In that case, it might be a security setting that is blocking it.

I will have another go at it when I return in a fortnight Les.

Hopefully no one will hear from me before then.

Thanks Les. I still cant open attachments despite trying all sorts of things my end.
From memory the spare goes to the rear passenger
rear passenger goes to front passenger
front passenger goes to rear driver
rear driver to front driver
and front driver to spare.

Can you confirm if this is the sequence in the attachment?

Probably too late as you have perhaps travelled by now, however, here it is from the document:

4 Wheel rotation
right rear to right front
right front to left rear
left rear to left front
left front to right rear

A 5-tire rotation would go as follows:
right rear to right front
right front to spare
spare to left rear
left rear to left front
left front to right rear

A 6-tire rotation would go as follows:
right rear to right front
right front to spare 1
spare 1 to left rear
left rear to left front
left front to spare 2
spare 2 to right rear

I've also recreated the document online with images here:

Mark.

I just use a tread depth gauge. Put the deepest tread on the front as it wears faster.

I am of the opinion that the worst tyres should be in front. If the tyre should fail, you can at least steer that end of the vehicle. You can very do that easily with the rear, especially at speed.

Phill,

wouldn't the tyre wear Front/Rear  be dependent on vehicle configeration,  like syncro drive against rear wheel drive (de coupler) ?  What are your thougts on this ?

We are getting two different things mixed up here.

Factor One: Measuring the tread depth will not indicate the one thing that the VC operates on – the actual rotational speed of each wheel.

Factor 2: The purpose of changing wheel locations is to achieve even tyre wear

Tread wear differences between front and back depend on the amount of straight line running compared with turning running – and turning running is any deflection from straight ahead.  A vehicle used for predominantly freeway running will have a more even tyre wear than one used exclusively in a suburb full of winding roads.

The VC operates in the same way – it makes very little input in the straight ahead and the most input in turning.

Measuring the tread depth tells you just that – the depth of the tread.  Measuring the SLR of the tyres (Static Loaded Radius) tells you how closely the wheels are running at the same speed front to back.

Les
