VW Nationals - Sydney 27/05/2012

All,
The info link about this pending Show is as I gave previously, goto: http://www.clubvw.org.au/showandshine
After reading up on it, a few observations worth noting ...

It seems the Show organisers have been really working their butts off this year to get things right for us, after years and years of trying (or being trying) ...

So for T3 Transporters, this item's been included under the Aircooled Categories: 11 - Transporter T3 - 1981 to 1992 - All
Anyone seen a local 1989 through 1992 aircooled T3 syncro lately? If you think that's a bit difficult, there's more! ...

Under Watercooled Categories, there is NO option other than: 38 - VW Commercial Vehicles (Transporter/Multivan, Caddy) – All Years
Well that makes a whole lot of sense. 1981 through 2012 - every single van variant in every single van model over 21 years -- in ONE category!
Begs the question then, is this realistically any LESS difficult? I think not. What's the point in entering other than to aid organisers fleecing entrants $30 per vehicle for zilch? Adding insult to injury, organisers have even fully offloaded ALL categories judging onto ALL entrants to the show. No time for a chat now lads. It's now work work work ... and for gratis! Please tell me this is just a bad dream I'm having!

Enough is enough. As a consequence of this hapless show organisation ad nauseum yet again, I see no alternative other than for us to still attend the show but boycott ALL our T3 syncros from entering the show and shine competition, full stop! Instead, we should take this opportunity and be creative ... do our own thing at the show this year ... no exceptions please.

I propose that ALL T3 syncros muster in the closest carpark adjoining the main show entry gate for our own syncrofest. It's not often we get together. Makes it a whole lot easier to find each other, keep an eye on each others vehicles and simply pay the $10 entry fee per person to come and go in and out of the show as we each so choose to do. As well, anyone else at the show interested in talking syncros can simply visit our syncrofest muster. Too easy.

Please see the attached pic showing the Main Show Entry, the edge of the Main Show Shed and my proposed adjoining and very close by syncrofest muster carpark.

This is my proposal. I find it very difficult to believe any watercooled van would be accepting of the show organisers bumble-headed categories to even consider entering, let alone doing so.

All agreed?

Cheers.

Ken

"25 years in the making"
Now if the first show was in 1988 and it is now 2012......................
Some people can't count.

Thank's for the heads up on the judging Ken as this is the first that I have heard of it.
I will be paying the $30 to get the good parking spot though.

There is only one catergory for T3s because there is usually less than 10 entered and now that the judging is the same for watercooled and aircooled, the only difference is the entry form.

Ken if you want to have a meet up in a car park, we could do that at any time. We could even pick somewhere nicer for a BBQ.

I agree Ken.

I like the idea as we can get the syncros together yet not waste another $30 (times are tough).

Mel will bring the syncro down again and at least I wont have to clean the underside of my syncro of mud like they complained about last time. Its all still there from the Point Plommer Rd. I still cant believe they would expect a syncro that is actually used for its intended purpose to have a spotlessly clean underbelly? Thats reserved for those vehicles that sit in a garage with a sheet over them!

I will bring the old bay low-light down and also park in the car park.

We may need to adjust our muster area on the day depending on how busy it is.

See you there Ken & Phil.

Ken,

The problem is not confined to NSW.

With each successive year at the Day of the Volkswagen, I strive to achieve a little more refinement with the aim of having the T3 Syncro eventually recognized as a class of its own.

At the first of the recent big DOTVW events at Cranbourne Racecourse, the organizers completely underestimated the attendance of all Type 2’s (that’s splitties up to T4) and they found that they had twice as many as would fit into the allocated area.

At the most recent at Yarra Glen Racecourse, it had been refined down to 2WD and 4WD T3’s sharing the same area, which was a huge improvement.  In terms of judging, we had earlier won the concession of doing our own judging.

The only way to achieve recognition and refinement is usually to become a member of the organizing committee, which is what I have done in Victoria.

This is one of the advantages of doing your own judging.  Instead of applying Concours standards to an off road vehicle like the Syncro, mud simply shows that it is being used for what it was designed for.

Ken,

Why not join the VW Club and offer your services to help organise the main event, including something suitable for Syncros.  At the annual WA VW show “The day of the Volkswagen” we don’t get many Syncros but it is nice to talk to those who do participate.  Participation is what it is all about.

FFS!!not again!
I have been going to that show since 88 and I agree that the organizers should probably move on and let some younger people do the job,but come on $30 dollars to get a good spot together as part of the VW nationals.
I am not there for a trophy, just to show the VW comunity that we exsist and are an active group that are passionate about our vehicles.

I say lets all meet up early and drive in as a group.
Who cares what class they put us in,who cares who judges your car.

It really shits me this whole car judging thing. My father has been entering his Golf since 88,and the last couple of years the watercooled catergory has been peer judging. You should of seen some of the shitboxes that beat him.He has been told by the watercooled mob that he wont win another prize until he resprays his car or changes the motor.Stupid.He wont be parked in the carpark, he will be part of the display, with his car the way he likes it.

Ken you suggested this last year then didnt even turn up.Last year we had a good turn-up and we were all parked together. We didnt have our own class either.
Cmon guys who gives a crap what is out in the carpark.

I will pay my $30 and park next to Phill and stand next to Jo-anne as she collects her trophy.
Skot I will be disapointed if you have the best well used camper in Australia, out in the carpark.
Any way its your decision.

I dont believe you guys are contemplating parking in the carpark, you guys might as well find a Bunnings or somthing and park there, while I will be at the Nationals.
No offence meant.

Dave,

Participate? We of course enjoy doing exactly that as you do also in WA, only this time we could conveniently be mustered together and at less individual cost. Where's the problem?

I made a mistake with my last post. the single watercooled van category covers 31 years of van models, not 21.

We are still not sure whether the syncro is coming down yet.

I am working on the insurance with CIL and they need a written valuation.

I gave all the details to the guy doing the valuation on Monday but he is busy so I have to wait till he gets around to it.

So at the moment the syncro is being used for emergencies only till I get some insurance (the old NRMA Insurance lapsed last week). Otherwise hitting a BMW would cost my house.

Hopefully it will happen soon.

If everyone is in the area and the judging doesn't happen on the way in we will bring the syncro down (if it is insured).

See you all there one way or the other though.

Cheers,

Skot

Benny,

I think you're on a winner!
Having never won, we shall all collude on the day and vote for your subasync ok. Stinks of rotten politics I know but heh ... I can see you now on the stage, all aglow, ready with the acceptance speech!

Actually how does a subaru engine fit within a Premier Oz veedub event .. show & shine contest? Can't quite get my head around that one.

Benny, in answer to your criticism, just two days before last years show, my wife suffered the loss of her mother. So with her passing, my priorities shifted a tad. Sorry for my failure to show ok.

Seems the $30 shed park may suit some, just don't be late.

May I suggest then all others for whatever reason, muster as per attached pic at any convenient time of your choosing during show time.

Cheers.

Ken

Kenny, thanks for that,I will remember to thank you personally when I win the award.I think youll find it is peer voting so if your in the carpark, you cant vote.
I dont think I will be the only one there with a non-VW engine in their Volkswagen, but hang on,maybe they should give me my own class.Subaru powered, watercooled, syncro between 88 and 91.Thats the trophy I want!!
Show and shine is long gone, check out some of the other cars in the carpark whilst your there.Keeping these old VWs on the road and gettiing all together is what it is all about.
Kenny it wasnt really critisim but an observation, sorry if I sounded a little harsh.
Looking forward to checking out all the Volksies and catching up with you again(if I get out in the car park).

Benny,
I suggest you go read and digest the program, as I have. Goto: http://www.clubvw.org.au/showandshine

Re peer judging. So in essence you are saying I've misinterpreted the following statement in it? ...
Judging for all vehicles will be done through peer judging.  Ballots will be provided to each entrant and each spectator upon entry
So any pedestrian upon show entry becomes a spectator, supplied with a ballot and can be persuaded to peer judge your subasync, in your favour. I can be bought!
Or else, if you're right, then you better tell the organisers they've got this statement wrong as well!

re Show and Shine. Got a problem with this shows SHOW AND SHINE program statement as well? ...
NO general parking inside the showground unless you enter the show n shine
This is also wrong?

Cheers.

At the Vic Day of the Volkswagen, we pay the Show entry fee, which is what enables us to park as a group in the display area.  The alternative is the general parking area, which does not allow us to park as a group.  Further, we do our own judging.  This is quite satisfactory all round.

- VW Commercial Vehicles (Transporter/Multivan, Caddy) – All YearsWell that makes a whole lot of sense. 1981 through 2012 - every single van variant in every single van model over 21 years -- in ONE category!Begs the question then, is this realistically any LESS difficult? I think not. What's the point in entering other than to aid organisers fleecing entrants $30 per vehicle for zilch? Adding insult to injury, organisers have even fully offloaded ALL categories judging onto ALL entrants to the show. No time for a chat now lads. It's now work work work ... and for gratis! Please tell me this is just a bad dream I'm having!

Makes it a whole lot easier to find each other, keep an eye on each others vehicles and simply pay the $10 entry fee per person to come and go in and out of the show as we each so choose to do. As well, anyone else at the show interested in talking syncros can simply visit our syncrofest muster. Too easy.

I really dont care where I(we) park at the Nationals.
It should be all together.
Whether those coming want to be under cover or in the car park you will still need to be there 7-30ish to get a spot together.
I dont care about judging,it should be done by those qualified to do so.

What I mean is proper independent Street machine judges.
Thats how the red billet bug won car of the day at the car show at the Sydney 500 last year.
Against all those "street machines'.
Without judging,it becomes a display and the 'show' then goes.
Shine is on its way out too..

I can get up to the Nationals this year  but have to get my entry in promptly. I'd like to renew some friendships and meet up with some of you for the first time rather than being a serious show and shine entry.
So we all enter and meet under cover together in the T3 section of Show and Shine?
Is there any camping occomodation on site for Saturday night or shall I just find somewhere close by?
Plan to drive up Friday return Sunday evening/Monday. Anyone need anything brought up from Melbourne or returned bearing in mind I still want to sleep in the van. Could throw in some of the laminated pictures that Les prepared for theDay ofthe VW in Vic plus a computer slide presentation if people are likely to be interested.
I previously offered (free) a bar to take childrens top seat belt attachments and got back the best pick up line I've ever heard. viz "Have I told you that I'm so attracted to you that I've already installed  safety seat mounting points in my Syncro so that our babies can travel safely."Think it was from someone in  Queensland. Does he want it freighted at his cost? Could he be coming to the Nationals in Sydney; does anyone else want it?

Look forward to confirmation that enough will be in attendance to warrant the drive up.
Cheers
Roger

All,
The info link about this pending Show is as I gave previously, goto: http://www.clubvw.org.au/showandshine

All agreed?

Cheers.

Ken

Roger, there is no camping spots at the venue, but that wouldnt stop me from just pulling up in the carpark. At least you would be the first there!
You are welcome to park out the front of my place Saturday night, but I cannot offer you a bed as I dont have any spare.I live in Menai which is no more than 30 mins drive to the Nationals.I usually drive past my Dads and Phills and we go in convoy.

There is some confusion as to and who is entering into the "show and shine".I say those who are entering to be in the carpark by 7.15 and we can all drive in together by 7.30.This worked OK last year,as we had minimum wait for entry and we all got a good spot together.

I also ask all those who are considering the park in the carpark option to reconsider as I believe that the more of us in the actual show the better. Why have two groups, lets all get together and have a great day like the last two Nats have been.

Those who are going to enter into the under cover carpark please respond to this post so we can get an idea as to who we have to wait for, before we enter.
Looking foward to seeing some great Vdubs and having a chat.
Thanks
BenC

Thanks Ben - It would suit me fine if i could stay somewhere near you Saturday night and then follow you, your dad and Phil into the show. Do you have a mobile number to contact you to let you know when I expect to arrive. Being in a campervan I'm pretty much self contained and being from pommieland originally I don't even know what a bath is.

Hope all those attending can meet inside as suggested. It does seem to weaken our case as a recognised branch of VDubbery if we can't all be together.

Anyone else from down South heading up?

Roger,
Camping in the carpark is quite doable ... been done before. If this suited you, then some other "Tassie" syncros may well be interested to also camp with you on the Saturday night.
From late Saturday through into Saturday night, it won't be a lonely place, there will be a hive of activity going on setting up the show.
Cheers.
Ken
