Gday Don,

In a word ... zero.

Well, with one exception. Buy a pop-top with a Transporter attached.

Sorry, in my view, that's being realistic, practical and economical. I
think that's what most of us did.

Cheers.

Ken

Don,
I think Ken's advice is probably the most practical unless you can
get your van over here or have a cheap way of getting your body
shortened. However I know someone who drove from Melbourne to Sydney
to get a Trakka roof installed on a T3 Caravelle. It was about 3
years ago and if my poor memory is still functioning basically cost
about AUD$6000 which grew to nearly 10 with accomodation and other
things. They seemed to have done a good job however. As Trakka are
represented in NZ it may be worth giving them a call.(Google Trakka)
Good luck
Roger

Roger,

Ha ha ... I like your optimistic view about after sales service by
Trakka for T3 campers.

Soon after buying my Trakka van a bit over 2.5 years ago, I naively
decided to visit Trakka at Mt. Colah in Sydney (head office/factory I
believe for Australia) to seek help with my 6th hand acquisition. It
didn't take me too long to realise they weren't really interested in
ancient history. Equally though, I took the opportunity to peruse their
latest showroom whiz bang offerings. I didn't take me too long to
realise I really wasn't interested in modern history.

So good luck anyone dealing with Trakka about a T3. Try it, heh you guys
probably have more charm.

Cheers.

Ken

Roger,

That's interesting.  I had been told that Trakka had thrown out their T3 roof mould when they moved from Chatswood to Asquith/Mt Colah quite a long time ago.  They certainly haven't kept any records of the T3 camping installation.  Several people still have the very sparse photocopied "owner's handbook" that came with the conversion but no-one has the back page that carried the wiring diagram.  I thought that they might have kept at least one but they told me that all had been dumped.  If they had a roof mould three years ago, I wonder if they might have recently made a new mould from an existing roof.

In the early 90's, I saw a place in the Asquith area that made a pop top very similar to the Trakka but I have forgotten the rest of the details, including the name of the business.  Don't know if they still exist.

None of this will be of much help to Don of Dunedin, of course.

Les

Les,

I suspect the reason why Trakka would be loath to make available their
T3 wiring design/schematics etc., would be the risk of them being
exposed to public condemnation. My exploration of their wiring sizing,
layout and installation methods leaves a lot to be desired. I'm no
electrician, but in a few key areas at least, I've upgraded mine.

Cheers.

Ken,

This is a very good point indeed.  The wiring was quite rudimentary.

But, the "handbook" had an index and the index listed the wiring diagram, which also happened to be the last page.  It just happens that the few people that I have been in contact with have tatty copies, as is mine, and they don't have the last page either.

I will be making some fundamental changes to mine in any event.  I bought a Piranha (locally manufactured) solid state battery management system some time ago and have yet to fit it.  It eliminates the relay used by Trakka, which did not discriminate between battery sizes or charge states.  They have a website that is worth looking at.

I found a company in the UK that make a replica westfalia roof kit.

www.vwelevation.com

Probably a bit too hard and expensive but shipping by sea freight can
be done reasonable economically if you find the right company.

I shipped a motorycycle to Oz from the UK and including a custom made
crate the cost was around $1000. It is a big bike so i thought that
quite good. I can dig out who the company was if you want to take it
further.

Cheers
