Where to buy new standard disc rotors??

Currently replacing the rear master cylinders on the drums and had the front calipers reco'd with new pads aswell. The front disc rotors are terrible though so does anyone recommend anyone in particular for a new set? or just repco etc. . .? Also to get my hand brake to click once and have a really nice tight pedal is that all to do with the rears adjustment? My Bentley is finally arriving soon from amazon so hopefully its in there. . .

Many thanks Bart CQ (attached ugly photo)

Gday Bartley,

I'd be interested to know if your rear brake linings were mostly worn only at the top, which is where the one and only star adjuster is located. If so the T3 setup is a retrograde step compared to the older transporter, the T2 Bay kombi ... for them the rear drum brakes could be adjusted top and bottom ... much better adjustment and much more even and longer wear. Probably VW saved a dollar on each rear wheel for T3 production in this pathetic way.

Rule of thumb is you need to adjust the rear brake linings first so they run freely, (more technical than that in Bentleys) followed by handbrake adjustment which is under the van forward of the rear wheels ... a single nut in a holder where the 2 handbrake cables come together. You also need to decide if the cables are running freely in their outer sheaths ... they do get rusty, worn and full of gunk, split, bent etc. May have to take them off and inspect for functionality, work them back and forth using a lubricant. Or else replace them. Be careful where you run them under the van ... sometimes they are badly run (apprentice mechanics) and they end up drooping down, meaning if you do offroading, things can snag on them and do damage. I ran mine as straight as I could and then fastened them in place as high and straight as was available ... no more drooping n snagging.

I'm still musing over which front disc pads I should buy .... mainly concerned for when the van goes offroad. There once was a Bendix 4WD version for our transporters, but a few years ago, in their wisdom ... Bendix dropped production of it ..... nice one.

Cheers.

Ken

This is because your brakes are out of adjustment. One of my brakes has never adjusted automatically from new and I cannot work out why. Beetles and Golfs only have a one side adjuster, and they wear evenly. Have you measured your drums? Maybe you need to buy oversize linings to have the correct radius.

Yes, you're not wrong there. I hate VW automatic adjusters, they never work correctly.

I've never been a fan of Bendix pads.

Try one of the Euro brands.

I had "EBC Green Stuff" on my Audi A3 and they worked well.
The rear brakes 'shoes' have worn evenly and are in good condition so we kept them on, just replaced the master cylinder things.  Will adjust rear drums as per.  New front rotors anyone?

Bart,

I have a new pair put aside that I probably won’t use.  I will check to see what they cost.

Gday Phil,
OK then  ... maybe I should start afresh and install new rear brake shoes and see if the situation can be remedied.
The unevenly worn shoes were there when I bought the syncro, previous owner had it "serviced" by Autohaus Strecker in Sydney.

I'm lead to believe the composition of disc pads varies (different models) depending upon the performance characteristics needed for particular driving circumstances. Yes?
In your case in the Audi, perhaps stopping ability would be the first priority for hard surfaces whereas I'm more interested in limiting brake fade. Idea being to retain sustained braking ability for as long as possible say on an offroad steepish downhill slope in summer, holding back gravity forces of a 2.5 tonne campervan. Is that fair comment? Any recommendations re brand and disc pad model for this scenario?
Cheers.

The EBC pads were good for stopping from high speed without fade. Isn't that similar to what you want?
