which engine oil?

Hello I have been looking through past subjects for discussion on what engine oil is commonly used on 2.1 engines. I havent found a clear answer yet and looking for some advice. My syncro has done 190ks and was rebuilt 45ks ago by previous owner. I have been using agip oil up until now but this doesnt seem to be as readily available as it was.

I have a tappet noise on start up if she has been sitting for a few days, which doesnt overly bother me but would be nice if this could be eliminated.

I am inclined to go GTX2 but wondered on peoples thoughts on this matter. Greg
The more expensive oils are usually better. GTX2 should be good.

I have nearly always used Mobile 1 from new and found that it eliminates the tappet rattle on start up after sitting for months.

Thanks Phill

Mobil 1 is fully synthetic as I understand it and I am wondering if the engine has always run on oil that isnt, is it too late in the day to change?

Mobil 1 is a fine synthetic oil.
If I use it, I use the 15W50.
There is no problem with switching back to a conventional oil after running a synthetic.

fwiw ..
I have used a shipload of Castrol GTX 20W50 in cars and vans over the decades.
Maybe 15 years ago,  for diesel VW engines I got turned onto 15W40 for an engine oil weight.
Then I used Chevron Delo 15W40 in 'everything' for years. ...
everything except brand new engines being broken in, or if temps are well below freezing.

Then lately I switched over to Shell Rotella 15W40.
I find that weight in a decent quality engine oil - 15W40 to be just fine, for everything from a little below freezing to as hot as it gets.
I have even had an older mercedes diesel engine I had diealed into the nth degree, and thought it would get just a bit tither/smoother with Castrol GTX   20W50 - nope ...didn't seem as good.  Went right back to 15W40.

I use addtives sometimes...
Prolong brand ....really good stuff .  The have one for transmissons, either manual or auto .........and one for engines.
Noticeable different to me when I put those in .
On older engines I might put in an 'engine restore' oil addtive.
but ....oil wieght wise .....15W40 is all I use ever these days.
Even in hot summers where it can be 100 degrees F.

Have fun ya all !

Greg, I have had a similar experience, one of my lifters became air locked and would not bleed down at all. This happened after I decided to fill with shell helix 15w/50 for the summer months. The first cold morning start induced the noise and no matter how hot the engine and ambient got it would not bleed. I switched to gtx3 15w/40, got to operating temp and increased the engine speed - silence. Numerous cold starts since and no rattle not even on start up. Mobile 1 is a great oil and fine to switch to after using mineral. For me the issue is dollars. Mobile 1 is more than twice the price and i would rather change the oil in my engine three times and clear it of 18 years of deposites. The other Greg!
