Whine in fourth gear

Thanks Bill,

I appreciate the benefit of your experience.

The 751 is more of a road tyre than what I have had in mind.
So for the time being I'll keep the Maxxis M8060 TREPADOR (RADIAL) on my list of possibles.

This latest set is developing a lot of cracks in the side walls and one alarming split after about 20000km and 18months. The tyre deaer I bought them from said they were abused. They were not, just used for the purpose they were made for. The last set had 50000kn with plenty of life left when a side wall blow out meant replacing all 5. Anyway this is one tyre I beleave to have soft side walls and to avoid. Bill

A few years ago I researched what was available in 14" tyres Try these;
Bridgestone Dueler D693, and 603.
General Grabber AT2 - 27x8.5 R14 LT 95Q load rating C - a highly rated tyre. Google it - I think they were sold through Bridgestone dealers. Almost identical to the legendary B.F. Goodrich AT tread pattern, O.D. and load-carrying capacity.
Nankang 27x8.514LT 95SS - an aggressive reasonably priced tyre, made in China.
I don't know if they are still on the market, but worth a try. I went to 15"rims, for a wider tyre choice.
Roger Bayley.
Thanks Roger,
I'll follow up your leads.

Tell us about your 15" change.
What wheels have used ?
What tyres are you running ?

Maxxis are worth looking at for a range of different AT and MT tread patterns in various 14" sizes.

I've not found anything from Bridgestone, General Grabber or any of the big name brands in 14".

With regard to the original question about where to buy and how much to pay, I normally do plenty of phone work to find the best price for my chosen tyre. Dealers will often reduce their first price. Also worth asking if fitting and balancing is included and if there is a charge for disposal of the old tyres to make sure you're comparing like with like.
cheers for all the info from everyone

The best combo I've found is 215/75/15 Bridgestone AT ( 694 I think )
205/75/15 gives gearing on the too low side .
Good solid sidewall and no tracking ( following road camber ) and less wandering
around with windy conditions.
Tread seems to work better in sand also, with less need to drop tyre pressure.

My two bobs' worth.

Mark
Thanks everyone for the leads on this one. If I do end up pulling this box apart, I guess while I am at it, does anyone know the quickest and / or cheapest place where I could get the gearbox oiling plates / baffles?

Thanks, Sam

Hi Sam,
I have always got mine from AA Transaxle. Daryl is easy to deal with and I have shipped several set across. daryl@aatransaxle

G'day Peter, I'm running CSA mags of an old Mercedes, 15"X6.5", with Firestone Destination AT LT205/75 R15 103/100S. These are a very strong all terrain tyre, which exceed the load-carrying specs for a fully loaded Syncro. Excellent all-round tyre, but might be hard to get now as quite a few members bought most of the remaining stock a year or two back.
15X6" Merc steel wheels are a popular way to go.
Some members prefer to run a larger tyre, but unless you intend to upgrade your power, the standard motor will struggle with them.
Roger Bayley.
Thanks Roger,

Appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Firestone is a Bridgestone company and Bridgestone still lists the Destination tyres on their web site.

I already have five Merc steel wheels and am thinking of buying a sixth.
Given where I take the Syncro, I have always thought mags to be a bit of a worry.

While looking for the Destinations on the Bridgestone site I noticed the Bridgestone Dueler D694 or 694LT tyres.
One of these two posibilities could be a good alternative if the Destinations are not available.

I'll have a talk to my tyre dealer and give both some serious thought.

Peter

Hi there
 quick question:
How we can put another seat into our campervan so that we could have a child seat - at the moment the van is registered as a two seater as the bench on the back is only on wood above the gas tank and although there are seatbelts they are attached to the wood and not the van itself so not very standard. Is there a way we could make the passenger seat in the front into a two man seat as there is quite a bit of room between the driver and passenger seat?

cheers

Christina,

Whatever you do, it has to be ADR compliant.  In your case, the seat to which the child seat is attached has to be ADR compliant.  Since ADR requirements are not retrospective, any production rear seat and seat anchorage points are considered to be compliant for the relevant year of the vehicle.

If a production three place seat is cut down, it needs to be re-complianced.  This opens up the possibility of finding a two place seat from any vehicle that already carries ADR compliance, in which event, only the attachment of the seat to the floor has to be complianced.

The child seat requires separate top tethering which has its own anchorage point either on the floor or on an ADR compliant rail that runs behind the top of the primary seat.

I have a Vw rock n roll rear bench seat.

It comprised of timber end frames that the steel rock n roll hinge assemblies connected to.

I got a engineer to drop out and here is all that was required to get a two seater + child seat compliance in my ex telstra.

All I had to do is fabricate steel end / upright folded frames that attached to the floor of the van which in turn support the rock n roll steel side hinges.

These steel folded plated basically did what the timber did yet connected thru the floor with comp plates on the underside of my van.

There is a minimum width required for each bum and as it turned out I could only get two seats out of my rock n roll bed. I could get three if I reduce the depth of my adjacent cupboard but for now I only have 1 kid.

I then installed a 3 point retractable seat belt on the sliding door side that in turn is where I place our child seat. And next to it I fitted a simple lap belt.

A brace was installed spanning vertically across the rear widow space to provide a mount for the 3 point retractable belt winder mechanism and upper pivot sleeve.

All holes drilled thru the body required simple comp plates. Being for seat belts, steel rock n roll seat end frames & above mentioned window brace.

And finally the upper child seat restraint belt anchor point utilised a similar penetration through the inner shell and utilised a steel comp plate inserted from within.

It was a simple exercise really.
