Workshop Directory

Workshop Directory

I have posted in the Files section the start of what I hope will become a comprehensive Workshop Directory for Syncro owners all around Australia.

Would all members with knowledge of relaible workshops please give details of workshops with whom they have had direct experience and they will be added to the directory.

Tony Ricketts can make a good start by posting the details of the person north of Adelaide who collected spares for him when he got stuck en route to Perth, plus the name of the extremely helpful mechanic in (?) Port Augusta (?) Port Pirie who fitted the parts and got him going.

I would also like to hear any negative experiences so that we know who to avoid.

Les

Let’s try that again – it’s in the Database, not Files !!

Gday ALL,
Seems to me NOW would be a good time for ALL of us to contribute individual knowledge to develop this collective database concerning Oz T3 friendly/avoidance workshops. How about it? Why sit back and just watch? At least make a good start now, keep the ball rolling and then each of us add to it as new info becomes available ... please. I can see this developing over time into a very useful onboard docco for every State and Territory  ...

Please first have a look on the forum at the database section ..  Les has created a file called "Workshop Directory"
This database shows the headings for the info that would ideally be provided for each entry. I have a couple to add:

NSW; Darrin Trigg Automotive; 13 Alma Ave., Woy Woy; Mike/0243431313; Gosford Region VW general mechanical/service.
NSW; Klaak Motors; 2A Lackey St Fairfield; 0297245901; 40+ years family business VW general mechanical repairs.

A few prods just for starters .... would you/anyone endorse these and if so, fuller details please for the Directory ...

Murray Lee ... Henry & Theo (Nymeyer Automotive) at North Belmont NSW
Bill or Neil ... Ron Schmidt at Kempsey NSW
Hartmuts saga ... avoidance for syncro transmission rebuilds! ... Stokers Siding Garage, NSW.
Goto: http://www.stokersvwparts.com.au/about_us.html Bit of a shame really, but a fact is a fact eh Hartmut. Still, I spent a few interesting hours poking around the VW graveyard there, not often one sees in one place a number of T3's for dismantling.
Anyone? ... Les Barlin Auto Services, Taree NSW ???
Anyone? ... Ben Durrie Auto Engineering, Teralba NSW, near Newcastle ???
Anyone? ... Midcoast Volkswerks, Coffs Harbour NSW ???
Anyone? ... Previously mentioned on this forum ... variously located VW ok South Australia mechanics ???
Anyone? ... QLD; Conti Engines; Shed1/38 Armitage St, Bribie Island; 0734083177; VW engine rebuild/exchange specialist.
Anyone? ... Western Australia .... must be a few worthy of listing ???
Anyone? ... ACT Canberra ???
Anyone? ... The rest of Australia!!

More suggestions in due course .... please, can we get going on this? TIA.
Cheers.
Ken

Please don't put someone on the list because he is a "good bloke' or he has been working on VWs for 75 years. We only wan't workshops here that have an idea what they are doing, don't rip people off and are not butchers. Wheel aligners are a good example. "I've got this bloke that does really good alignments. It scrubs the left tyre out, but he says that's because of roundabouts. He doesn't use the factory specs as he knows better and you can't adjust the camber on VWs anyway." This sort of thing is common on forums and will make the list useless. It's already happened on this forum.

The point of creating a Workshop Directory is to list workshops of which members have personal and positive experiences.   It is counterproductive to list a workshop simply because it is there.  (Phill’s “mongs with chainsaws” comment lurks in my mind!)   Even having T3 experience is not particularly helpful if there is no accompanying knowledge of the Syncro.

To warrant listing and therefore be of reliable use to members, a workshop needs to be well established, preferably long established, and to have a staff with a good working knowledge of the Syncro.

Essentially, we seek referrals from Syncro owners who have used a particular workshop for many years and who can say “these people know what they are doing and have treated me well.”

An exception to desirability of a workshop being long standing can come from experiences like those encountered by Tony Ricketts, where a hitherto unknown source of parts north of Adelaide procured parts for him and sent them on by bus to where he was stranded.  He was then lucky enough to find an exceptionally thorough mechanic who fitted those parts and ensured that all was well before he let him go on his way.  Another such example was Greg Esposito finding a very helpful mechanic in Dubbo.  This information is worth listing.

Subsidiary to workshop service is finding new and used parts.  Such sources can also be listed in the directory and specified a helpful parts supplier.

I don’t expect that the directory will ever contain hundreds of listing but its purpose will have been served if we can come up with even a handful in each state.

That depends on your problem.

The syncro bit is really only the front end. If you have an engine misfire or a rear (or inner front) CV problem it doesn't really matter if it is 2wd or 4wd.

Phill,

True.  The MV engine is the same for the 2WD and the 4WD.  Diagnosing engine problems is important, therefore T3 experience is valid in this case.

Phill and ALL,
Yes I agree. This is definitely a "work in progress", I would envisage the criteria for it will fine tune over time. In particular the "Comments" column. Ideally, given the limited space, only succinct particulars will fit in.

As I see it, the database encompasses 2 needs. Identifying regional workshops that individuals use in their everyday lives wherever they reside and identifying "emergency" workshops discovered whilst on trips throughout the length and breadth of Australia. In my opinion, that pretty much excludes ALL official VW service centres, mostly, they think a T3 is pretty quaint, never seen one and anyway, ever so yesterdecade.

We run the risk that if the criteria requirements are made too exacting, we'll end up back where we started ... with very little.

Lets just give it a bit of a shake for now and see where it all leads ok, after all ... we started with nothing, we could end up with a lot thanks to members input based on their own individual experiences throughout Regional and country Australia.

Gday All,

I would like to endorse Ken's comment about the Workshop Dirctory.
If we are too pedantic, we will end up with very little.
If I am up in the bush, I would be glad to find a mechanic who has worked on a T3 and get me going again.

Cheers,
Theo
