Jon.

Thanks for introducing us to this Forum Jon.
I found it very interesting.
There is a lot on this site.

I was instrumental in the foundation of a Forum for the Austin Sheerline and Princess Club.
I did not set it up, one of our members who had considerable experience with another forum did that.
My role being to write a "How To" instructions, after he taught me over the phone.
It has been interesting to see how it has slowly taken up by members.

Les,
Have you given any thought to having one for Aussie Synconaughts ?

Peter

Jon,

Thanks for the link - very detailed repair information.

I noticed on some pages they call Syncro 'SYNCHRO' and that's in an official VW book?

Les are you reading this post?

It is also listed as an option - selectable 4WD with a vacuum switch ( not via cable).

All in all, a good read.

Cheers,

Theo

Theo,

Yes, I am reading it.  We actually have a large collection of manuals, particularly Phill.  It is probably time that I made a list of them all and added it to the files.

The page that I am reading says bowden cable??????
The actuator is still vacuum but operated by the cable or selecting "G".

This is in the gearbox manual.

Mixed into this is information from way back that several European countries had greatly reduced tax on agricultural vehicles.  One of the defining factors was having a Power Take Off so such a device was offered as an option.

Earlier still, a solid shaft drive to the front wheels was offered and that was cable engaged.  In the hands of an incompetent driver, this was a serious gearbox buster and VAG soon stopped promoting it.

Peter, this finished up in the Drafts folder when I fell ill recently and I am just catching up.

Peter,

When I finally acquired a Syncro in late 2003, there were some active Syncro websites in the US , South Africa and the UK but nothing here.

I collected whatever email addresses that I could find and began to send out rudimentary newsletters in early 2004 as a means of putting Australian owners in touch with each other but moved to the Yahoo group in August of that year.  This proved to be far better because it provided a venue for direct exchange of information and chat.

Given that the active members are very few in number, no more than a handful, we have done very well in terms of acquiring a lot of technical information and acting as a support resource.  If anyone feels that they need more than this group provides, they are very welcome to set up their own web resource.

Theo,

Do you still have your MV analyser and is it still for sale?

I am in a heap of bother!!!

I am driving from Melbourne to Uralla (NSW), I am half way up the Newell Highway .   For the first time ever, I got several occasions when the motor had a bit of a cough and very brief power fade.  It was something that I could live with until I got to Uralla.

But . . .

I stopped for fuel just south of Dubbo, got back in the Syncro, got very high cranking speed – but it simply will not fire.  The ECU is clearly not getting some information that it needs to fire up.

About my only option is to get it trucked to the VW dealer in Dubbo and keep my fingers crossed!!

But this has highlighted the wisdom of carrying an analyser!!

Les, Really sorry to hear of your troubles. I would not jump down the electronics path just yet. As always in a break down you need to check for spark and fuel. Loss of spark may make the crank sound slightly faster. A VERY HIGH cranking speed tells me that you have very little compression. Two things can cause this in my experience. The first is a mechanical issue with the valves (or pistons - unlikely). Or excess fuel in the engine (flooded).
Lets take the fuel side first. After having tried to start it remove the fuel pump fuse and hold the throttle half way and crank it. If it eventually starts and stops, or at least sounds like it is going to start, it is flooded. The most likely cause will be a stuck injector (or may be a failed fuel pressure regulator).
With the valves you need to first ascertain that the cam is turning. Unclip a rocker cover and crank. The other thing to do would be readjust the valves.
In short firstly stick a screw driver up a high tension lead and check spark then get back to us. Greg E

Greg,

The high cranking speed would be down to heat soak – straight off the highway, shut off the engine, fill, go to the toilet, etc and the engine would still be at highway running temperature with the coolant pump not running.  I mentioned that in the context of there being ample cranking speed.

Bill mentioned the Hall sender and that is at the top of my list of suspects.  Whilst driving, it continued to function; after a stop, it gave up.

Regarding flooding, my attempted restart was as usual – turn key, no pedal.  It always fires instantly.  I kept trying the no pedal initially but when it was obvious that it wasn’t firing, I tried giving it some pedal but the result was the same.

How likely is it to be a valve problem in these circumstances? I entered the town at reduced speed (50 limit), and drove into the servo with normal engine, i.e. no unusual engine noises.

Les

If it bdoesn't sound like you are cranking it with the plugs out, forget all that stuff. Stick to the basics. Have you got spark? Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key on.

Someone from the UK Syncro forum has scanned and posted a load of VW workshop manuals.
Might be of interest to some here.

The other thing is if you get to dubbo you could try that guy that helped me when I bought mine. He was grumpy and annoying but is probably more likely to have parts for a t3. His details were in the workshop file but I can't find the file? Greg E

Greg E

Theo,
Do you still have your MV analyser and is it still for sale?
Les
