14" and 16" Syncro Wheel Guards.

Someone in the UK has asked for expressions of interest from folk who
would be interested in the purchase of either 14" or 16" replica guards.

He is not asking for commitment, just E's OI so as to ascertain the
value in spending his time going the next step with the potential
manufacturer.

Please let me know (within the next week) if you are and I will get
back to him for you.

Alternatively, the guys original web post is here:
http://forum.80-90.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=21982
if you would rather contact him yourself.

Cheers,

Andy

Andy,

Make sure you ask the vendor which arches they are manufacturing. There are actually 2 types of arches rather than the 1 & 2 types being suggested in the CLub80-90 thread.

The first type is the Syncro 16 arch. That set requires that you cut the rear edge of your steel arches. The main purpose for that set is to cover the fender cutting done on the Syncro 16 option. The material is a sort of polyurethane. The fronts are quite thick compared to what you would normally do in GRP. The rears are much thicker and any void that would be left between the steel arches and the arch surface is filled in. That one thick piece of poly or rubber. Fronts are attached by a combination of screws and rivets (front actually attaches and swings out with the door). Rears have studs built in to the backside and attach with nuts.

The second type mentioned are the Tristar ones. They are similar in material, construction and method of attachment to the Syncro 16 arch. I am going to speculate that purpose of this arch is to make the wheel opening smaller to hide the relatively unsightly undercarriage in these fancy version of the doublecabs. It would be very tricky to make these in GRP as some sections are about 50mm in cross-section. No cutting on the steel arches required.

The third type are the arches used for the postal service vans//trucks. These are just front pieces and are made of an ABS type plastic. They are very thin and should be easy to replicate in GRP. How do I know? I had them replicated about a year and a half ago. Unlike the two previous types, these pieces have a stippled finish. The copies I had made replicated that same finish in GRP so it is possible to do. These arches do not require cutting of the steel arches either. Unfortunately, they did not come with matching rear arches so those have to be custom made.

Cheers,

I have posted under wheel arch extensions an article with diagrams which I had filed presumably from the internet but unfortunately not referenced.I wouldn't mind betting however that Phil has the exact source - where does he get all his information from?.Presumably the entreaty to persist with your VW dealer is no longer true. I was greatful for BenT's explanation that the front units fit to the doors as it seemed the last thing you needed when hopping in and out the front was a muddy wheel arch extension to slide over.
Must admit I'm a bit tempted  to express an interest but mud hasn't been a major problem lately in Australia  and I am loath to start cutting into or even drill into the bodywork unless its really necessary.I'm also only running 205 x 16" tyres - not really wide ones.

Yahoo!7 Mail has just got even bigger and better with unlimited storage on all webmail accounts. Find out more.

Well, that answers my question. I sent the following message which was rejected by the Yahoo. I can send the PICS to those who want to see them.

Roger,

I've attached PICS of the front arch with the door open and closed just to it is even more clear. The ones pictured are for a Syncro 16. I forgot to add that there are some aftermarket wheel flares available for those desiring wider tires (yeah i spell funny). I believe these to be originally manufactured by Projektzwo then later replicated by the likes of Winler (aka Das Kraftwerk) in Germany. Beware of this last one. I see these being sold on US eBay. They will clear sliding doors on T3's so equipped. No problems for those with Doublecabs (Crewcabs) and other truck derivatives.

I'm not sure if this Yahoo Group permits attachments so the rest of you may not see what I am sending to Roger. If Les thinks this is useful, I can upload the rest of the arches photos in the group's photo section. I have PICS with and without arches during the restoration process of my Syncro 16 Doka. It's a convenient way to envision how much material is cut out of he steel arches for those wanting to run taller tires.

Cheers,

BenT

Ben,

I would like to get your pics onto our website.  Send them to me direct and I will look after it.

Thanks

Thanks for that advice Ben.

I look forward to seeing the photo's once they are put up.

Sorry Les I have run out of my broadband allocation and have been down graded to such a slow speed that I can't seem to transfer photos to Yahoo without it dropping out but it does set up the album. Can you delete 2 of the 3 empty ones and hopefully late next week when I upgrade to higher and faster capacity I will then be able to transfer them. They may possibly be made redundant by Ben's photos so feel free to delete them if they don't contribute anything.

Roger,

As Ben says in a later email, he has sent all the pics to me and I will sort them into our photo files..  For the moment, I have collected them into a single folder prior to putting them onto our website.    When you get your upgrade, we can do a final arrange of what needs to go into the pics or files.

As an aside, I am on Optus cable and have been for a long time.  I have found it to be reliable.  One of the advantages of the higher pay-for connection is that I get very good tech support.  Haven't had to use it much but it has been a lifesaver on the few occasions when something has gone wobbly.
