15" All Terrain tyres

Hi guys,

I just got my new 15" Mefro rims.

The big question is, what tyres to get. I want All Terain.

What ever I decide on, I want to store the spare in it's tray.

What have you drivers got on your 15's?

Gerald.

Gerald you will need to modify the chassis rails or deflate a 15" A/T to fit it in the spare wheel holder unless you go for a low profile tyre (not recommended). Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for your reply. I have tried the BF Goodrich 15" AT, fully inflated, on a 15" Mefro, bolted up, and it just sneaks in the tray. I may think about using a slightly longer tray bolt inside a sleeve, so it's got a little more clearance away from hoses etc.

But I'm unsure about the road noise.

There is also the Bridgestone Firestone Destination AT, ( a less rugged profile)which apparently sits in the clamshell. It is classified as a 'Light Truck' tyre. I will enquire as to it's load rating.

Regards Gerald

Gerald,

A few of us on this Forum have Firestone Destination  205/75 15” fitted. It will just fit in the tray.

Cheers,

Theo

What size? Beware of the steering shaft as well as the hoses.

Hi Theo, thanks for that.

For some reason I can't view the 3 photos I think you sent.

Gerald

I have 215/75R15's, both in an old Hankook and some Geolanders, both AT's, neither fit in the Syncro spare carrier.

Richard

Hi Richard and Peter, Thanks for your input.

Hi ALL,
Same as Bob's tyre, I also have the 15" BFG all terrain tyre in the carrier. Mine is a tight fit when inflated and without mods to lower the carrier front bolt nor lower the carrier hinges. Agree it is an exacting fit, even down to rotating the tyre so the sloping steering rod fits into a gap on the edge of the tyre. Put a dab of rubber grease on the rod where it rubs in the gap, not had a problem since 2009. Probably would help a little more to deflate the tyre as well. The tyre doesn't rub against coolant hoses.

In the forum directory are the 2009 pics of my two main steel beams running front to rear, link is below. From factory build, both beams were ground to a circular shape to accommodate the original 14" tyre. All I did was grind a bit more out to help the 15 tyre fit better and repainted the grind. Seems to work ok ever since.

If I had a gripe, I'd say the larger tyre acts as an even larger barrier to the flow of hot air leaving the radiator and dissipating around the tyre then rearwards under the metal floor pan. Hence adding to the hotter foot on the floor, particularly in summer time.

On balance, an ok compromise on the alternative which I disliked, lugging the spare tyre around on a rear carrier.

Cheers.
Ken

Hi All,

I run 225/70/15 Cooper AT/3 tyres on my vehicle but use a rear carrier for the spare.  I have run the Coopers for many years on both my previous '82 camper and the current '89 Caravelle Syncro.  They have proven to be excellent in the conditions where I have travelled.

Well there you go Scott!

Agreed I'm not familiar with that impediment, so unless they can be re-routed, my post is relevant only to vans without P/S, which I expect there are still quite a few.

So just as well I didn't buy a caravelle then eh?  HA!

The choice of suitable tyres is diminishing. The original tyre fitted to Australian spec Syncros was the Michelin X 205R14. If you are running a stock engine, keep in mind that larger diameter tyres change the overall gearing and reduce performance, especially on the hills. They also make the speedo read low.

You need a tyre with a load rating of 97 or better, preferably of LT (light truck) construction. Tyres with an aspect ratio of less than 75 are not good in the bush, and over 215 width require modifications to the van to make them fit.

When I last looked for A/T tyres a couple of years ago the choice was limited to Goodyear Wrangler ATR 205/75R15 (97 load rating), General Grabber AT2 205/75R15 (97 or 104 load rating), BFG A/T 215/75 R15 (100 load rating), Yokohama Geolander 215/70 (98 load rating), Falken LA At 195/80 (103 load rating), Kumho AT KL78 205/75, Bridgestone 205/70 D684 Dueler, and Firestone Destination 205/75 RI5 LT (103 load rating).

After reading a lot of independent surveys I settled on the Firestones because of their excellent customer reviews, and have been very pleased with them.
I immediately noticed that there was a lot less rolling resistance compared to the previous BFG's on 14"rims, and how quiet and civilised they were.

Even the small increase in rolling diameter when I went up to 15" took the edge off the performance, and though I have been a fan of BFG A/T''s on four of my 4WD's, I would not consider them on the Syncro because the larger diameter of the 215/75 would reduce the mountain climbing ability in G gear. (I live on the Great Divide, and crawler gear is only just adequate on some of the steeper inclines).

A bigger engine would compensate for the bigger tyres, but the combination would place much more strain on the transmission.

The Firestones have been on the van for a couple of years, from expressways to extreme 4WD, and cross the Great Divide regularly between Goulburn to Orange, through ice and snow. They have carried heavy loads over rough country, steer and handle impeccably under all conditions, have never had a puncture, and show hardly any wear after about 30k, I am very happy with them.

According to my GPS, the speedo now reads spot-on, and the tyre easily fits the spare wheel carrier.

The only mild criticism is that they ride a bit harshly for the first couple of miles over the pot-holes, until they warm up.

Cheers, Roger (Beetle Bayley).
Hi Bob.

What was involved in lowering the hinge point on the tray to give
clearance please?

Thanks. Jim.

Michelin list a 215/70R15 (never tried them or tried to source them)

I have a set of  Geolanders (just using them up before I get new rims/tires). Have never been happy with them from new, I bought them for my T2 kombi,.They have been noisy, ware unevenly, pick up a lot of stones in the tread and have had a couple of flats. Lift has not been the best either (estimate I will get ~60k km out of them). Never had those issues with the Hankook AT tires I had previously.

No issues with the Geolanders as far as grip on or off road, but then have never pushed them hard either.

If i remember correctly longer attachment bolts and a spacer between the body and the hinge plate
