15" Syncro Wheel/s WTB

I am chasing 5 of 15" wheels, I prefer steel wheels in good condition.  Or 1 as I have Nick here in Canberra that has 4 but I need that fifth before I buy his 4.   If you have 5 and sell the 5 then Nick misses out (sorry Nick)

Are there any differences in them or is a 15" Syncro wheel a 15" Syncro wheel?

Richo, i stand to be corrected but as far as i know T3s came either in 14" or
16" . The 16" being a different car in that it was/is being much stronger built.
You can recognize the VW wheels on their much smaller holes against Mefro
or MB wheels.

Hi Richo,

As Hart said, there are no original 15" Syncro wheels from VW.
Only options are Mercedes steel rims (but there are heaps of different around in the market) or the for T3's common Mefro 15" wheels (which are originally for trailers) from Germany.

To find a 5th match for Nick's set, it's important to know what 15" he offers.

Cheers Arne

Thanks Arne and Hart,

Yeah I'll talk to Nick and see what they are and if they are Merc wheels I dare say I should be able to find a 5th easy enough...

As mentioned I was under the impression Syncros did have a 15" Wheel option and they don't and it seems merc wheels are the way to go however there are some that mention the differences in bolt diameter can be 12mm verse 14mm also the tape of the nut is different.

How about using something like a VW Polo 15" steel wheel 6Jx15 5x100 ET38 to run 215x75x15 A/T's

There is one for sale on ebay atm, these Polos could be another option for steel wheels and they are VW. and they could be a straight swap.

Or am I just wishing for a miracle cure?

You are right with the miracle.

Polo's don't fit as bold patter of the T3 is 5x112mm and centre hole is 66,7mm (none other VW has such a big centre hole).

Also load carrying would be way too less from the Polo.
Also Merc rims are just targeting the T3's required load rating.

Cheers Arne

There is another solution:  you can get your stock 14" wheels modified to 15x6 or 15x7 by Eastern Wheelworks.  They will remove the 14" rim from the wheel centre and reweld the centre into a special drop centre 15" rim.  You will need to send them your 14" wheels and specify offset, I sent with  Oz post 2 wheels per carton.  Advantage is your wheels will have your chosen offset, will be plenty strong and will look stock.  This is not a cheap option, I think was about $300 for two wheels??  When you get them back you will need to paint them as they come raw, I had mine sand blasted and powder coated at extra cost; about $40 I think but next time I would just paint myself as there is some rust starting to show.   That said you could probably find some alloys for less than this.

This is getting hard  :(

I am now thinking of getting 16" Syncro wheels and 215x65x16 BFG AT's very slightly bigger that the 215x75x15 but I think possibly a better option.

So what do you guy's think?  or should I just keep looking for 15" wheels?

FYI I was so expecting much worst perfomance outta the 2.1 WBX so I feel I won't be too disappointed with the larger wheels...

I do like Neils option though...

Just rung eastern Wheelworks.

14 inch into 15 inch (steel)
They can do it   $175 unpainted

Richo, and where do you find Syncro originals??? Busfest or Michael Ghia would be a good start.
I ended up with Merc 16" . My speedo isnow spot on and the big spare fits under the rear seat in the Doka for 2nd spare i keep a 14" under the front. Can do this as i have a decoupler installed.

Hi Arne, had a look at our Polo wheels...gosh they are minute...
But what about TigOne (tiguañ)?
They do fit once the centres are slighly enlarged. And they look ok. Hart

Have you tried MB Spares in Fyshwick?  I was lucky enough a couple of years back to get a set of 5 for my Syncro from a vehicle they were wrecking at the time.

Ian

I just emailed them. :)

thanks

Happy New Year to all.

Wishing all enjoyable experiences with your Syncro for 2017.

Does anyone know where I can acquire a FRONT WINDSHIELD WASHER RESERVOIR tank?
Mine has sprung a leak at about the half way mark. Not a big issue as I still have some capacity.
I have tried searching Bus Depot, Just Kampers and Go Westy and couldn't find one.

A plastic welder could weld it for you, don't know any in Adelaide but know of some in Sydney and Brisbane.
I have a plastic welder and have repaired my own fuel tank and radiator overflow bottle on another vehicle.  I am fairly sure it would be the same material; ie. polyethylene, in any case don't throw it out if you get another one,

Neil.

Hi Folks,

I just did my 2.5 conversion and after my van was sitting idle for 8
months my speedo has stopped working.

I have checked the operation of my speedo cable and it spins well (plus
its only about 3 years old so it must be the speedo.

It is locked in well and just does nothing.

As my engine relies on a speed sensor - I need one to be working.

Does anyone have a working one?

Thanks,

Scott

Hey Scott,

Sorry can't help.  Just reinforces for me on my Suby conversion I plan to get a CV mounted VSS, as well as a GPS HUD speedo.  I'm already on my second syncro speedo and a new speedo cable, and it's still unreliable after about 6 months.  It gets the needle wobble or not working at all moments.  From what I have read I should try adjusting the angle the speedo cable enters the speedo, whilst I'm driving.  Should be a fun one.  Or maybe I have a problem with the little plastic gear in the front diff.

Only other thought it might be worth taking your speedo to an instrument repair place, might work out more economical then getting one (probably from overseas).  Good luck!

Sam
