15" wheels.

Great going back thru the past postings to get info on wheels. Apart from Mercedes are there any other wheels that will fit 15" VW. Also do I need an exact ET matching to my existing 4 ET37's. I'm looking for a spare. The botching mechanic from Cairns VW auto supplied me with 14'" bald, flat and punctured. What a louse.

Michael

Michael I don't think there are any vw wheels that will fit. Canterbury wheels have a set of load rated alloys available I was told but not checked prices. Maybe try a few wreckers with that part number and see if you can get another

there are, real VW steel 15 inch wheels.
currently Van Cafe in the US sells steel south african T3 wheels in 15 and 16 inch,
and they are 'real' T3 wheels as far as I know ..
made for T3 VW vans.
the 15 steel ones I got from Van Cafe a couple of years ago  came in a VW /audi box , painted black really nicely, like powder coated ..
and fit and look exactly correctly.  'real' VW T3 steel wheels.

I am not as familar with their current 15 and 16 steel silver painted wheels, but they might be the same ..'real' VW T3 wheels.

I didn't want to put anything on my vans except real proper wheels, didn't want spacers or adapaters or anything goofy ....wanted 'real' and correct 15 inch wheels.
Rhein alloys are nice too..
those are 'real' VW T3 alloy 15 inch wheels. Expesnive, and seem heavy to me, but those are the real deal too.
about that crummy tire that was sent..
I just wonder what is going on the in back of people's mnds to justfity sending out crap or doing crap work on people's cars and vans. I just can't get it. Is the guy an alcholic ?

Like what is the point of doing something for someone if one is not going to do a pretty good job of it at least ?
Like are we supposed to try to gain off each other, or are we all supposed to help each other as we can ?

This place has 15" & 16" mags at a cheap price.

Some Audi wheels also fit.

Just wanted to add the 16" wheels Scott is speaking of are Mefro wheels not original VW.

Take care when purchasing other VW and Audi wheels including those from a T4. They usually have a 57mm centerbore vs. At least 66mm for the T3 Syncro.

The Merc wheels you mentioned are relatively easy to acquire here and in Europe. They are sold in the US as winter wheels. The metal is significantly thinner than those on my original steel Syncro 16 wheels. The Merc wheels with a passenger car tyre on it weighs as much as the bare steel 16" Syncro rim.

People are using them seemingly without incidents. But that would be akin to juggling sharp objects. There won't be a problem until you catch one on the wrong end.;-)
Steel wheels are more forgiving. If possible, I try to avoid wheels underrated for the vehicle they are to be installed on. Some steel Merc wheels are rated for use on both S-class and C-class. I take that to mean they are rated for the 5,000 lb. + sedans but also happens to fit the smaller C-classes. You would have to look at each wheel specification.

Hi Scott

What I should have said was. Real VW wheels available in Australia. We don't have all the lovely aftermarket choices you guys have for wheels and pretty much anything non-standard for a T3 is impossible in Aus. The original poster was looking for something 15" to put on his T3 and any steelies you might find in a wrecker here would be from a later vehicle, T4, Caddy etc and the offset is wrong or the PCD.

If only the postage/shipping was more reasonable i'd have a set of those steel 15s and a pair of van cafe bumpers on the way to dress up my syncro in no time.

Actually maybe a group buy is possible. I'll organise the shipping if there are expressions of interest? Need to be a full container though to make it worthwhile.

As for the shoddy work, I don't get it either but i've experienced it too many times also.

I couldn't get Phil's link to work before but this is the page with wheels

And no the c class wheels are not load rated

T4 wheels have the wrong offset and the centrebore cannot be enlarged without weakening the bolt face.

....and the US wheels are thinner than the Australian supplied ones.

Phil and I saw these wheels in Valla and they are very good. Made in Germany. He has 15” and 16”. I am in the process of buying some but his stock is running out. Waiting for a phone call back.

Will keep the group posted.

Cheers, Peter from Port.

Note, the ones on the web page are different to the ones at Valla.

Thanks for the info Ben. Can you give me an idea of what the centre bore on a T3 Syncro is. I'd like to check mine out and measure for myself before committing myself. Where do I need to measure it from?.  Are you questioning the strength and suitable integrity of the wheels I currently have on my van?.  Who knows what the botcher man might have done to this van before selling it off. Could I have a spare wheel of same diameter 15", but narrower 6" instead of 6 1/2" without affecting the drive transmission and for emergency use only?

Michael I don't think there are any vw wheels that will fit. Canterbury wheels have a set of load rated alloys available I was told but not checked prices. Maybe try a few wreckers with that part number and see if you can get another

Thanks for the info Ben. Can you give me an idea of what the centre bore on a T3 Syncro is. I'd like to check mine out and measure for myself before committing myself. Where do I need to measure it from?.

Michael, the centerbore needs to be at least 66mm to clear the ridge on your front hub. No such clearance problems in the rear.

Are you questioning the strength and suitable integrity of the wheels I currently have on my van?.

I am just saying it is am unknown quantity. Without seeing the wheels in person, I can only go by what information you can provide about them. The Mercedes aftermarket supply chain is vast and do not always have the same quality standard. I have seen steel rims with centers less than 50% as thick as the stock T3 wheels on my Syncro. Since the C-class is a relatively light vehicle, it is not unusual for find wheels able to support that vehicle but not a heavier car or truck. If there are no marks indicating load capacity on a wheel, I tend to err on the side of caution and assume it cannot handle the weight of a fully laden expedition equipped Syncro.

Who knows what the botcher man might have done to this van before selling it off. Could I have a spare wheel of same diameter 15", but narrower 6" instead of 6 1/2" without affecting the drive transmission and for emergency use only?

The problem with narrower widths it affects the resulting diameter of the tyre. For example, the exact same tyre on a 6" wheel vs. 6.5" will be taller (larger diameter). The wider rim will cause the tyre to spread wider. If you had to use such a wheel for an emergency, I would remove the driveshaft to avoid damaging your viscous coupling. Or can install a decoupler. It's probably less expensive to just but the correct spare wheel.

What do they look like Peter, are they the white steel ones? Greg E

Same info applies. If you really get into a spot, I am sure that wheel is available here. Shipping is not cheap but not outrageous either. I can't recall how it cost but I have sent a steel wheel to a forum member.

BenT

Hi Francesca.
Might you be considering buying a set. As another member in the forum has already indicated, might we be abale to organise a group buy of 15" as a way of lowering cost as well as freight costs?

Is this the guy on the Gold Coast you are referring to? Mind if I ask how much he''s asking for a set of 5?
