Tony,
Tirerack.com sells steel wheels with specs similar to that for US$49 each. They were $15 each when they had a sale last month. I believe they will ship to OZ. They spec wheels for 1999-2000 C230 which is a lighter vehicle. Hundreds of them sold to US Syncro owners including yours truly. ET35 or 37. I can't recall. Will bolt right on though lughole seat is very slightly off contour. No doubt someone will jump in here and say they are not strong enough for the weight of a Syncro. To each his own. Lots of the in use and I have never heard of anyone bending or breaking one yet. It should be said that the 16" steelies on my factory Syncro 16 Syncro weighs nearly twice as much due to thicker centers.

Tony,

You need to state the offset.  Using non-standard offset is not good, using various offsets is worse.  And be careful with Mercedes wheels; determine what diameter studs they were designed for and whether the contact face of the nuts are tapered or spherical.

I think that all Mercedes are 12mm studs so it will need special nuts.
The wheel load rating is probably more of a legal problem than a practical one in australia.
Rudi was selling proper 16" wheels.

All late model S, M, G-Classes are 14mm. Most steel aftermarket wheels are bored for both (12mm-14mm) increase their application range.

We don't have many of them in Australia so the wheels are rare.

The hole size is OK but the tapers are different between 12 - 14mm.

Thanks for the advice. If I can locate a 16inch steel rim I will take it to the "Wheel Doctor" here in Perth together with one of my "AZEF" wheels where he will check the offset and then alter the Merc rim to suit!

Hi Ben T,

Thanks for your help ref: Tirerack but see their reply to my request below...

"The steel wheel for the Mercedes requires a 12mm lug bolt with a ball seat

The Vanagon Syncro requires a 14mm lug bolt with a conical seat. So not only the seat is different, the 14mm lug bolt will not go thru the 12mm hole in the wheel.

Sorry we cant help you thanks for your enqiry.

Lere"

If you can suggest another steel wheel other than for a 1999/2000 C230 maybe I could try tirerack again?

Regards

Tony
