1st gear hits radio

Gday to all.
Hey Phill, yesterday on my way home from Goulbourn,I got stuck in traffic on the M5.Whilst crawling along in first gear,I noticed that when I selected 1st,the gear knob hits the radio. This is something that has just happened.
It is the same thing that your ute was doing when I came over, before it was fixed.
What was it that you replaced on the ute?
I have in the last couple of years replaced the ball/socket mechanism under the gear stick so I dont think it could be that.
I asked your expert but he cant remember what he replaced.(oldtimers)
I am going down to have a look this afternoon, any info on what you replaced would be good.I know you are now happy with the way the ute shifts into gear.
BenC

Ben, just guessing here, had the same problem and fixed it by adjusting the gearshift base plate as per Bentleys. Worked for me, hope it will work for you also.

Ciao Hartmut

The gearstick may be bent/cracked. It could be about to snap.

I'm at home if you're going past.

Ben,

There is a clamp and spline where the rear shift rod attaches to the front shift rod – near the plastic universal.  If the front shift rod has slipped in the clamp it could cause this problem.

This is another point of shift linkage adjustment.

Hartmut,
This may be a useful comparison check.
Shifted into Reverse, First or Third, from the centre of gearshift knob (i.e., centre of gear lever shaft) to the top front rounding of the metal dash, mine measures near enough to 150mm.
My knuckles are being spared!
Cheers.

Maybe your radio is too big. You might have to swap back to an AM tape deck.

Thanks for all replies.
Greg I still have the standard radio,so that cant be it!
Found two things.
The nut that holds the shift lever to the shift rod at the transmission was loose. The splines on the shift rod look worn, this is a worry.
I adjusted the plate under the gear stick and I had a reasonable shift, then it got bad again. Then I found it,a dirty big crack in my gear stick, under the spring.
I left the car at the workshop as it looks like I was lucky it did not snap completley off!
Mcgraths have them in stock.I ordered one.
Will have to drive an old Passat for the next day or so.

Don't throw the old one away. They can be rebuilt.

Make sure that you get a RHD one.

Go under your van , find the shift rod which is inside the plastic tube. unbolt the tube holder by 10 mm wrench then slide the tube backward to the engine. you' ll see the clamp and u-joint. Mark the clamp by a pen then loosen the clamp by #12 and #13 wrench ( I'm not so sure, maybe 12 and 11).
To make your shifter away from console , you have to shorter the shift linkage. Try to move just a little bit, let' say a millimeter or two then tighten the clamp and get into your car to test it. If you go too short, you might have problems with R, 1st and 3rd ( assume that your van is 4 speed syncro).

this trick also apply to resolve R/G problem but need just a little advance understanding how the shift linkage work with tranny. Twist the linkage to appropriate angle is the key to succeed.

sorry for my English.

Gday all.
Replaced my bent/cracked gear stick today, and I can report a very good and smooth gear shift into all gears.
I have had trouble selecting 2nd and reverse for quite some time,so I believe that the stick has been bent for a while, and only cracked over the weekend.
When in first gear the distance between the centre of the gear knob and the dash is 150mm.
I dont think the shift has ever been this smooth since I have owned the vehicle.
I have replaced the ball socket(gear stick) and the rear ball socket(transaxle) to try to fix up the gear shift in the past.
I also noticed the gear selector slippers(underneath,on the front selector shaft, ala Ken and Graham),where completly gone.
Will try to get some of these soon.
Maybe something that should be checked,if your gear stick is the original and you are planning a trip.I am glad it didnt break off whilst down in Goulbourn with my family on Sunday.
