2.1 syncro WAS RUNNING now wont start

Hello group,

I just recently purchased my 89 syncro and it has been running great
starting first time every time. However after leaving it sit in the
shed for a few days I started it up to find it had a sort of sticky
lifter noise. Being the mechanical minded kinda blokes we are we
pulled the rocker cover off the left side and had a look. Put it all
back together and then nothing. Turns over, has spark, has fuel, just
wont kick over. Doesn't even back fire up the pipe as if its a timing
issue. Unplugged battery for a while to see if it "restarted the
computer". . Any help would be great as I'm in Brisbane, 20 yrs old
and had plans to take this sweet heart to Tasmania by boxing day for 3
weeks. . . .

Many Thanks..

My phone is 0438253274 also.

Bart
Bart,
A bit of lifter noise after sitting for a few days is normal, it usually goes away after heading up the road a bit.

If you pulled the rockers off you must make sure you seat the push rods back into the lifters properly or you will damage the retaining clips on the lifters and you could damage or bend a push rod on start up.

Not sure about your starting problem, you didn't knock of a wire or something off the coil? earth wire?.

Good luck with it
Dave

Hi Dave

Hi Bart,

It sounds like your hydraulic lifters are out of adjustment – probably the valves are not closing properly. To adjust them you need to back off the adjusting screws so that the push rods are free. Then with engine at TDC turn, on the appropriate cylinder, the adjusting screw in until it just touches the valve stem and finally turn clockwise the screw by 2 turns. Repeat for each cylinder. After the engine is started, run it for some time so that the lifters become primed properly (clatter sound diminished) then repeat the adjustment process.

All the best

Yurik

If it is of any help - i seem to find the old donk  benifits from a new set of leads about every 16 months -  i seem to always drop a cyl which makes the old girl a little harder to start.
Its cheap as: change the plugs, leads rotor and cap
Look at it this way -  it cant hurt

Bart,
Also taking off the coil wire would not effect anything on the computer, these things don't have a limp mode.

I'm thinking the engine is a bit flooded and the battery is now low and not cranking fast enough to start it. Jump start it from another car and see what happens.

What leads are you using?
VW leads nearly last forever.
Bart

Look in the files section under digifant fault finding.
There is a document that lists most of the causes for not starting or
erratic behaivour. The list is NOT in order and no substitute for the
manaul.
Start with the easy ones first ie: plugs and leads, earths, sensor
connections, fuel pump relay, ECU relay etc.
You have to work your way through all those items.

If someone has replaced the plugs and leads then they would almost
certainly be BERU (Not original) and they DO fail!

IF you said it had been sitting a few days, as said by others lifter
noise is normal (for a minute). Humidity could be the cause of your
problem. Most likely you have a bad connection, lead or plug.

LEADS & PLUGS: Order a new set from Vintage Vee Dub or go original if
you can afford it!

SENSORS and COIL: Get some electric cleaning solvent (such as CO
contact cleaner) and pull off each connection and spray liberally.
then work the connection a few times.

EARTHS (Engine bay on left hand side, ECU (behind back seat) BAttery
(under driver seat) Front dash (under glovebox): Remove the bolts and
clean all lugs with fine (220) emery paper and clean with solvent.
Sand the paint on the body as well. Finally after rebolting, coat all
with coldgal.

Re the ECU. My understanding is it will reset every power down. The
only thing it does differently is use another "MAP" if the O2 sensor
is crook, but that should be another topic...

Dont hesitate for more help.

Goodluck

Peter

Will have to check (aprox $100)- what happens is the ends with the resistor go - thought its to do with all beach driving/wash down.

Hello again group,

Sorry to abandon the forum, we've been working on what is a compression and lifter issue for the last three nights until midnight and have found Yurik's reply very helpful (thanking you greatly).  We managed to bleed 3 of the four lifters on the left bank and have one which is just adjustment manually.  It will probably decide to bleed its self half way to Melbourne on boxing day, so hopefully I get it adjusted right and we are back on our way again.  We've also been fitting out our own In House Trakka set up.

If anyone sees the fitted out white 89 syncro around over the next three weeks between Brisbane, Melbourne Tasmania, Sydney back to Brisbane be sure to flag us down.

Many thanks for the help once again guys.

Bart,

You need to ground that coil wire anytime you try to try this operation. I have experienced a fired ECU as consequence of power surge caused by that arch you speak of. Check to see if any components got welded by the spark.
