2wd transmission into a syncro?

Sam. The adaptor plate is just a modified 2wd gearbox mount. So when you source your 2wd 5 speed box get the front engine mount as well. No other mods required, certainly not chopping your syncro. The gearbox linkages all work the same. Your g gear will now become first etc. I'm hoping to be at old bar this weekend. Are you heading that way or anybody coming from your direction? I could pass it on. Otherwise australia post will do. Regards Bill
Hi All,

I'm actually in a slightly different position where I have a Syncro van with No gearbox/motor, was purchased this way. Of course I have now found out that gearboxes are almost impossible to find ! Looks like I'll also have to go with a 2wd box for the time being till I find a better offer :)

Cheers

Scotty

You will probably have to source overseas and get a box shipped to Oz which other people have done. With sea freight it can be done economically especially as Oz dollar is quite strong against pound and euro at the moment. Make sure you get the right box to match your front diff. An engine you can probably source here easily.

Try the following suppliers

Hi Sam,

You may like to give Ron Schmidt a call on (02) 6562 5730.  He is a VW gearbox guru, sells Albins gears and his labour charges are very reasonable.  Ron specialises in kombi gearboxes used in offroad racing buggies but I know he has done Syncro boxes too and he has fitted a diff lock and Albins gears to my gearbox.  He has the proper VW jigs for setting up the crown wheel and pinion so there is no guesswork. He can build it as mild or wild as you want it to be.  Good idea to stop driving before something breaks as parts will be the biggest cost of the rebuild.

Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australia] 2wd transmission into a syncro?

Hi Everyone,

I know this is sacrilegious, though unfortunately dollars to spend on my van are short at the moment, and a lot of winding noise is coming from what I assume is the transmission / diff. Best to pull it out before something breaks. And with my viscous completely passive, I am driving a 2wd anyway.

So, my question, does a 2wd 4 or 5 speed easily fit into a syncro? Just remove the prop-shaft? Do you need any other 2wd mounts or??

My plan is until I can save up some $$ and properly rebuild my box, add the taller 3rd and 4th gears and perhaps a LSD or locking diff, I will just put in a cheap 2wd box for a year or two. Which I guess leads me to my last question, does anyone know where I can get a cheap 2wd transmission? Unless of course someone knows of a cheap syncro box floating around somewhere...

Ok, sadly, thanks for your help guys,
Sam.

Hi Scott,

That youtube footage is Volkers compilation of footage from the trip. I think all the participants have it on disc, but I never realized that it had been posted. Good find. It was nice to see it again.

Hi Scott & Phil,

I discovered I don’t have it on disc, but rather on my laptop hard drive. I guess if it is posted on you-tube it is in the public domain now. Any-way I was able to copy it, and a 1000 or so pics, which you can look at (or not) if you like.

I’ll have my lap-top with me at old bar, so if any-one else wants a copy, just bring a blank DVD. (File size is ~600Mb)

Les, you might also want to post a link to the you-tube video on our site if it’s not there already. (address below).

Brian, Les and all,

I have posted a link to the video on www.syncro.com.au as well as an approximate map of the route:

Regards
Mark.

PS - just back from German Autofest in Canberra - a great day - we were the only Syncro, and at the end of the day a 2nd T3 turned up - Caravelle GL with NSW reg.

Brian,

I'd love a copy to if there is a chance of that.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

That youtube footage is Volkers compilation of footage from the trip. I think all the participants have it on disc, but I never realized that it had been posted. Good find. It was nice to see it again.

Neil,

There is a guy named Terry from Lake Illawarra NSW who wants to do a similar thing to his 74 bay kombi as you have done to yours.

His email address is:

If you are interested in pointing him in the right directions.

He has a large old Bus he is planning a round Oz trip in and is going to tow the kombi behind until he finds somewhere restrictive he wants to go.

By the way - I found this link to the Kombis to the Kape trip you did.

Maybe bring back some nice memories.

Cheers,

Scott

Neil.

Ok, sadly, thanks for your help guys,
Sam.

And, speaking of videos, this one popped up on a US Syncro group – originally from Mike Plompen:
