4x4 Improvements

Brian, thanks so much for your effort to put me into contact with Peter, I can tell you, no tyre kickers here, he bought the tractor over the phone , organized pick up and bingo, it went yesterday.

So , no more driving a Porsche whilst slashing the paddocks. One more toy gone....what’s next?? hartmut

Hi Hart,

There is a well respected air flow meter place east of Melbourne (near
Cranbourne), but I can't remember the details. I was put on to them by
Porsche when I needed an AFM for my 968. However, they needed to have a good
meter to copy the specs from, as they didn't have them for a 968, so I
eventually sourced one from Bosche in Germany. It's likely they would have
the specs for a T3 though. It was a couple of years ago and in the end I
didn't purchase any-thing from them, so I no longer have their details.
Maybe Les knows of them.

On the fridge, there's a guy in the VWCV who has actually made a trailer out
of a fridge, that he tows behind a motorcycle. Very handy BIG esky, but only
2 wheels of course.

Brian.

PS. I hear your tractor is on the move.

send her the tristar’s AFM .On the phone I talked her through the

Hartmut,

Owning a Syncro can be a rather serious business and sometimes rather
expensive, so we can do with some light relief.

Hartmut,

The AFM problem has had a lot of coverage over many years, much of which I have copied and filed.  I will go back through it all and get it all in the one place.  Included in this are details of how to modify an original AFM harness to overcome the problem.  From memory it involved adding a capacitor but I will have to find it to be sure.

Yes, we need to accumulate knowledge about who can service/repair not only AFMs but also ECUs.

Soon after I got my Syncro, I had what was thought at the time to be an ECU problem.  (I say “thought” because the recently detected wire short could have been the cause.)   The ECU was sent out to an electronics place for service / repair – twice, in fact.  I later learned that it was returned on each occasion with a ticked check sheet but with no mention of what fault/s had been detected and what had been done to the ECU.

This cost me a lot of money and did not contribute any knowledge whatsoever.  The fault could have been sunspots or bank interest rates as far as we knew.  If this ever happens again, I will not send it to anyone who does not provide full diagnosis and rectification details.

Available expertise will reduce over the years so it is in all out interests to collect this information.

Les

Hello to all the improvement HEROS,
thanks to all the sugestions. I have did it, yesterday to my surprise I bought a tyre pump!!!!
I think I leave the 14 inch rims, because I am worried of the loss of power and extra fuel costs with bigger rims.
I went to a tyre place, and the guy told me there is only a Hancock availabe in 14 inch.
I have an other question in regards to driving through water. Is there anything one has to do to protect the engine, or the radiator fan?
By the way, who started this thing with the frige? I looked around and aksed lots of people in the trade, for a 4x4 frige westinghouse switch, which would fit 1990 model Syncro.
People started looking strangly at me. I got nowhere. Can any one help?

Umm…..

Part of owning a Syncro is having a sense of humour, very necessary to cope with the things that a Syncro can throw at its unsuspecting owner out of the blue.  It could even be that the Syncro comes with a bent sense of humour built into the ECU.

Yes, we stray into the ridiculous from time to time and I am reasonably sure that it is a self-protection mechanism to keep our sanity intact.  And you have to be careful of the several old bastards on this list – as epitomized by Hartmut and me – who are given to going off at tangents at the drop of a valve….

Greg,

Have you heard any feedback on these tyres?  Since BFG stopped making the AT in 14”, there hasn’t been a lot of choice.

Hey Les, My van had mismatched  light truck tyres on it so a set of AT's was a priority. I decided to stick with the 14" rims for now. The bfg are apparently still made just not imported, one tyre place rang them and they said 6 to 8 months! So I found the maxxis and bought them, $189 fitted. Only having experience with their road tyres I was expecting them to be noisey but am pleased to report an all round good tyre on the road. I have not had a chance to hit tracks yet. I think this would be a great tyre on your 14" rims for year round driving and you could have some dirt spitting mud terrains on your 15 or 16" for those trips away.

Greg,

I am astonished at the BFG news!!  The 27 X 8.5 ceased production many years ago and did not appear on the tyre table on the B F Goodrich website.  I even emailed them at the time and they said that there wasn’t enough demand to justify manufacture and they had dropped them accordingly.  I immediately went to their website when I read your email and, yes, they are back on the list.  I will make some further enquiries locally.

Progress reports the Maxxis will be very helpful to all.

I had some trouble with my old T3 panelvan once.It would break down, under acceleration, with no guts at all. After checking all the obvious, fuel, spark, timing etc.I was puzzled. The next thing I thought AFM.I borrowed a brand new one, from the box.No difference.I tried a spare ECU,thanx Phill. No change.I had my injectors clean, serviced and pressure tested. There was not many other things that could be busted. There was only really two things else it could be,as puzzled as I was,I was determined to work it out. There was only two other things it could be,really. The o2 sensor or the Engine coolant sensor . The O2 Sensor.'I have never replaced the o2 sensor",a reliably bloke told me.'Try the coolant sensor",I did it worked. But thats just what happened to me once.
The fuel injector system that we all have is pretty basic, there is only a few things that can really go wrong.

No Ben, I am a home dad at the moment and don't have access to an alignment machine. I just know 85% of the places in Melb will stuff it up. Greg

Win 1 of 4 Sony home entertainment packs thanks to Yahoo!7. Enter now.
Greg,I suppose you will just have to trust one of the conpentant 15%.Get the specs from the attatchments, and the how to from the Bentleys and take it to one of them.Go to one that has experience in 4wd and trucks I would suggest.A good wheel Alligner should have no troubles alligning the Syncro. But they probably need to know how to do it properly.(Bentleys).A front and rear allignment shouldnt cost more than a hunge.Make sure you get the Syncro specs not the T3..

It's about 99% in Sydney.
