4x4 Improvements

Bob,
in regards to off road improvement, like slipery tracks or beach driving.
Harry
Scott,
Is a diff lock the simpler and less costly way, than larger rims and tyres. How effective is a rear diff lock? Any idea about costs of both options?
Harry
Harry,

I have yet to use mine in a 4wd situation since fitting the rear diff-lock - actually I haven't really been 4wding since my eldest daughter was born and she is now 6.

Before that I had raised suspension and larger wheels/ tyres fitted which managed to get all round a drought stricken Moreton Island and a few Barrington Tops / Watagan Mountains expeditions with no issues.

Our syncros have very good traction even without a diff-lock and seeing that diff-locks are hard to get and very expensive I didn't do mine until the standard gearbox broke.

I don't really like front lockers as they take away the ability to steer hence I will never have one of those on my syncro.

Hence I would go with say interior light first (Hartmuts recommendation) then some nice big all terrain tyres on 15 inch rims. Mine are 235 x 75 x 15 but my suspension is raised and these fit. On a standard syncro (14 inch) I understand that 215 x 75 x 15 are the maximum size.

The you can go and play in the sand.

Cheers,

Scott

Scott,
I was wondering, if I had 15inch rims ,whether I had to change anything?
At the moment I have Hankock Light truck tyres, with standard road profile.

Your 15 inch wheels would need the correct off-set - I understand some Mercedes steels wheel do this yet the model of car escapes me at the moment - Ben has done this recently and he would know the details much better. However 15inch wheels with 215 x 75 x 15 tyres will clear everything no problem and look a heap better than the standard wheel package.

My previous tyres were Hankooks and they did me for about 70K kms. They even held together after staking one on Moreton Island and driving around for a couple of harsh days like that getting thrashed around.

I am impressed with the BFG's though - very quiet for their size and nuggetty tread.

They would look great on your fridge too.

Cheers,

Scott

Harry,
If you are thinking of optioning up your present stock syncro for offroad use at minimal cost to you, I reckon the cheapest way by far is to buy a syncro already optioned up. Sell the syncro you have as is and wait till one comes along. You just need to be patient, like most of us have had to do when looking for a syncro. Mine only took 4 months, monitoring every single day, I was expecting it would take a year. Expect to travel interstate to get what you want and move pretty damn quick doing it.

Things to look for for offroad usage are larger wheels and tyres (15" max), optional taller springs and OME shocks all round to suit the taller springs, a locking rear diff, an optional locking front diff, a VC that WORKS or else a solid shaft AND decoupler. The solid shaft offers the best 4WD performance for sand and mud, so long as you understand that for hard surfaces, only use 2WD to avoid drivetrain damage. Guestimate would be $15-$20k for all that for supply and fitting by a selected competent installer.

Cheers.

Ken

I believe that an off set greater than et 32 will cause no dramas.A rolling diameter of 686mm will be the max you would to go with a WBX.Standard rolling diameter is 661mm,481 rev/km.Dont go under 465 revs per km.You will never get there in time!I will post the part number of my Audi 16x7 wheels next time Im under it.I think they are of an A4-A6???I dont run any spacers.Dont just buy any wheel/tyre combination.Let us all know before you buy.

While I was trying to buy tyres,Phill let me know that, you can make 15x6 rims with an offset of et32, made from the centres of heavy duty 5mm Syncro rims, with a special deep hub outer bands, imported from the US,then welded together at Clarkes Wheels in Sydney. From what I understand, you should be able to run B/F 215/75/15 tyres with these rims, and still have decent rev/km ratio. With no clearance problems what so ever.

Thanks,
that is worth looking at. I also like the idee about the air compressor and chains. Could you fit chains on15 inch tyres and still have no problems with clearence? I like low cost options. I am just dreaming of the unstopable Syncro which drive up into the sky delivers a load of ozone to plug the ozone whole, which was created by leaking air conditioning gas.

Hartmut,

Owning a Syncro can be a rather serious business and sometimes rather expensive, so we can do with some light relief.

Sounds like there could actually be a market for an off road Westinghouse Fridge/ Freezer combo. Judging by the shape of the Syncro most of us almost have one.

Thanks for this Les, now I have a question for you.  I have a customer at BEGA  in conversation  she told me that they own a t3 but it won’t go anymore. She gave me the symptoms we all know too well and I decided to send her the tristar’s  AFM .On the phone I talked her through the replacement procedure , she then started the car and went to town to do the shopping. No drama. Now is there a facility somewhere where these gadgets get checked and fixed, MEL or SYD or anywhere else???? I’m dealing with the most wonderful people who built their own straw bale home and who know

Absolutely nothing about cars. They used all our products in their home and I owe them  big time.   hartmut

Hi Hartmut,
I have had several AFM repaired at www.injectronics.com.au.  Some were able to be fixed and some not.  I believe there is another place in Melbourne that repairs them also but there name escapes me.

Hi Hart,

There is a well respected air flow meter place east of Melbourne (near
Cranbourne), but I can't remember the details. I was put on to them by
Porsche when I needed an AFM for my 968. However, they needed to have a good
meter to copy the specs from, as they didn't have them for a 968, so I
eventually sourced one from Bosche in Germany. It's likely they would have
the specs for a T3 though. It was a couple of years ago and in the end I
didn't purchase any-thing from them, so I no longer have their details.
Maybe Les knows of them.

On the fridge, there's a guy in the VWCV who has actually made a trailer out
of a fridge, that he tows behind a motorcycle. Very handy BIG esky, but only
2 wheels of course.

Brian.

PS. I hear your tractor is on the move.

AFM's come up reasonably regularly on eBay and The Samba. I'm guessing that buying a spare would be cheaper than paying someone to investigate the non-working one. This one could then be checked out at leisure, in particular in accordance with Peter Kestels maintenance guidelines ... Available In the forum files section.
Cheers.
Ken
