930 CV upgrade

Hi,
Finally got my off-roader up in the air where I wanted it, but now on the limits of the CV’s. Took it for a drive and the CV’s were noisier than I would like, could be the balls just running in a new position but would not like to push it off-road and get stuck.  So looking at 930 CV’s and shafts and 16” front outers for more articulation. Is anyone running them and how do they find them?

Cheers,

Michael Roberts
PLease let us know how you go Michael, want to go the same way, just fitted 5 new ones, but want to start collecting the proper ones  The other item on my wishlist is a complete GO WESTY exhaust kit in s/s. hate to look at my 25 yr old rusted out pipe work... Ha.

Hartmut,
I know what you mean about the exhausts, I was thinking of Jet-Hot coating the pipe to make them last and look a bit better.  Not sure on the S/S exhaust system, S/S can crack and not so easy to repair but they do look really nice.

I just installed 930 cv's at rear.
My axel to guard dimension is 20.5 inches (both front / rear)
All stock 14 inch cvs in front.
No need to upgrade them.

GW.
They have two choices:
A) empi
B) Porsche

Empi are looser - cheaper - and fine.
Greater articulation - that's enough.

Ben,
Not sure if it my van you’re after a pic of but see attached, this is the only pics of the van on the ground at the moment. This is it with road tires so looks a bit odd, normally run off-road tires that fill out the guards a bit more. It measures 22 inches (560 mm) from the center line of the hub to the bottom of the wheel arches as it sits. On full droop there is very little movement in the shafts and that’s with spaces on the inside VC’s already.
 Cheers,
Michael Robrets

I am running genuine Lobro Porsche 930 CVs on my offroad T2.  The vehicle is only lifted 25mm above stock height but has an extra 50mm of down travel.  I went with the 930s because I was worried about them popping out on full suspension droop.
My thoughts now are that I really didn't need them.
Unless you run an offroad style boot that goes over the whole CV outer, you don't gain much travel because the standard boot flange has a small hole which fouls on the shaft at large angles.  I run aftermarket boots that go over the CV Outer.  If you did this with a standard VW joint I think you would get good travel.
This may be happening with your VW ones.  You need to jack the vehicle up so the wheels are dangling with the boots off to see whether the shafts are clearing the outers and that the balls are tracking within the edge of the joint.
Also timing the joints could net a little extra travel.
Having smaller CVs could be an advantage in that you want them to fail before internal gearbox parts and the 930s are much stronger.  I have never known a VW CV to fail anyway,

Neil.

Neil, all very interesting, thank you for the info. This is stuff one won't find in Bentleys. Will do some checking when back from Tassi. We are at Port Mac. are you somewhere near "en route'? I m leavind for Melb on Wednesday in company of Paul N.  Failing: In my 20 odd years driving T3 I had 2 fail on me , both with no warning, or very short warning. Both where outer/front. In both cases all the balls ventured... and I could drive to a place where I could replace the CVs.
