A/C help

Hello, My prestige A/C system in my Takka has just died. (its never been brilliant) Its been holding a charge but the compressor is shot. From reading the many posts on this subject I would just like to check a few things before proceeding.

The compressor I need is a Sanden SD7 H15????

Can someone give me a manufacturers name and number for a TX valve replacement that works on these systems.

Should I fit a genuine compressor bracket at this point and will the new Sanden Compressor fit the genuine bracket without requiring any alteration?

With a new compressor and TX valve will the bloody thing cool down the inside of my vehicle? The old one didnt.

and lastly
Should I know anything else before seeking advice from the experts.

Thanks for any information it is appreciated. Greg
Hi Greg,

got the identical system in my Trakka . It did not function when I bought the vehivle 8month ago. I took the Sanden out (srew fittings on top) and loosened the compressor.

next I disliked (to put it mildly) the agricultural fitting and bought the proper one from BenT. Once it was all clean ,looking like new, it was installed. Btw the wiring to the distributor

was routed under the steel bracket and the wiring was severed , the fitting at the distributor was torn out due to stress and all would have failed within the next few hours of service.

The compressor fits the bracket of course, in a much better, simpler way. After connecting the hoses , and after an oil change of the compressor, I flushed the system followed by

drawing a vacuum for 8 hrs. .Then leaving the vacuum for 24 hrs to check for leaks, R12 was used to charge the system. I use no scales or quantity equipment for charging.

I use a frigies experience and common sense when the right amount of refrigerant has entered the system. (backpressure and temp of returning gas at compressor inlet).

In my years of commercial refigeration  I maybe replaced a handful of expension (TX) valves. Most of them , because they were the wrong ones in the first place. The same stands

for the filter/drier, change it by all means it's cheap enough and easy to get to. Although my compressor is noisy  it works a treat, of course not cooling the whole car, but giving me a

cool breeze into the face.

Greg, aircon is dead simple once the basic rules of physics are followed, however they are no longer taught and when you talk to your towns eggsperts and show them this letter they

will tell you that I'm nuts and should be questioned for using R12..   Good luck ,Hartmut  (formerly FREEZE 22 Commercial Refrigeration Services , Krugersdorp RSA )

Chris Band (Camperize) did a bit of work with this and the problem was the ducting. The actual ac was OK when overhead ducting (a copy of genuine) was used. I have never seen a dash ducted ac work successfully.

The genuine ac works perfect.

morning greg
in my dual cab i use minus 30 gas the compresser was changed to a larger unit in the past, fitted the same bracket , i stuck my head under but can not see the make of it . the system works better then the prestige unit. the biggest problem is the amount of glass in the vehicles and heat transfer you need to have window tint fitted if you have not done so already. i think that the evaporative unit in the dash is the problem as it is not really suitable for these vehicles as regards to its capacity,i have a falcon and peugot 306 and both of them are far more efficient maybe its because there units are factory fitted and designed not a after market installation.

it cools the cab ok but the front seat passengers have the air flow direct to their faces from the facia air outlets but the back seat people do not get this. i remember one stinking hot day that i thought that the unit was not cooling the cab but when i pulled up for petrol and got out i relalised that the cab was cold, i have a glass sunroof in mine with the darkest tint i can get but you still can feel the radient heat through it
, my wind sceen is tinted with dark tint acrorr the top but you still can feel the sun on your hands when driving, all other glass is tinted. the tinted sceen is a lot better than the non tinted type for radient heat. the other thing i found was that my fresh air inlet was not shutting properly and it was letting hot air in when traveling, fixed that little problem.
as i see it you have to battle two types of heat one is thermal [air temp] the other is radient ]sun uv] and as kom bies are glass houses on wheels it can be a problem.
i beleave that the caravelle kombies had 2 systems in them and had a 2-5 ;ltre motor fitted to handle the load, i am sure that some will salute this statment and some will shoot it

I keep hearing that window tint does not reduce the heat. Any opinions?

It would depend on how dark your tint is. On my van with 75% "limo" tint, there was a 15F difference compared to a nearly identical van painted the same colour in the 118F weather in Death Valley.

from my own experiance when i first bought the van the sunroof had a system of black matrix dots on it and a light black tint, one wanted to wear a hat when driving,  so i had the solar film fitted and it made it comfotable you can still feel the heat when you touch the glass but there is no burning sensation on the top of your head as i mentioned there are 2 types of heat source

I keep hearing that window tint does not reduce the heat. Any opinions?

Hi Phill and All,

Just sharing my experience on the window tint - if you get the good stuff, it makes a world of difference.

My van originally was a panel van, I had all windows put in but originally fitted fixed windows in the back. Sleeping in the van come sunrise before you knew it the van was an oven and you felt more terrible from the heat than when you went to sleep drunk. You would crawl out of the van in search of water as soon as possible, worse than sleeping in a tent.

Now I have custom sliding windows with flyscreens times four, all tinted. I put a sunshade on the front windscreen, and not only do I have good privacy even without having got around to making curtains yet, I can sleep in for quite sometime before she gets too warm. Might just open up some windows then keep snoozing. My mates come and wake me - they have tents you see. I was at a music festival over new years, and even though my van was parked in full sun, it was one of the coolest comfy shady spots we could find.

I recently also purchased some skreenz, and next project is to make flyscreen on flexible magnets so I can have the sliding door open though still with easy access like this http://www.bugoffscreen.com/ Oh, and travel north to the Hartland for some AC help :)

Anyway, IMHO window tint good. Even the other half agrees.
Sam
