A Syncro annoyance

Sometimes it’s the little things about the Syncro that are annoying but necessary.

For years I have tried to achieve the simplest, cleanest and less bothersome way of topping up the engine oil via the extendable oil tube. Flexible funnels/fixed funnels/combination tube & funnel and nothing really satisfied. Flexible funnels meant holding and
shaping them to receive the oil from a container which was big or small. Fixed funnels meant nudging them against the tailgate to get a reasonable flow rate. Combination funnel/tube was simply messy and awkward. And, in all cases there was the inevitable cleaning off the oil laden devices afterwards and the space these things use in the van. Without using any of the above you are left with basically pouring oil into the tube directly from a bottle like container, therein lies the risk of missing or messing the pouring accuracy - even a gust of wind can upset the exposed flow; it has happened to me. Then one day as I was squeezing tomato sauce onto a tasty pie out of a plastic squeeze bottle I experienced a revelation!

I now use a tomato sauce squeeze bottle to input the engine oil into the oil receiving tube - no mess, no awkwardness, no clean up, no storage hassle. Simply squeeze with ease and press the clip like cap on - done!

Now, you may think this was a trivial issue to raise, long-winded and probably zany, but as I mentioned earlier sometimes it’s the little things that are annoying - in this case: no more!

Totally agree with that filler - it is a pain in the ass.

I have it with my stock 2wd but the filler in the syncro is a lot easier as it has a Subaru donk - no complaints there. Much easier with oil changes as you can load up a bigger funnel and as it is a vertical feed it is much easier and quicker.

Love the sauce bottle idea - bit of Aussie ingenuity there!

Well…I hope the 2 bottles of Rosella are labelled correctly.
I couldn’t imagine biting into a FOUR’N TWENTY with a squirt of 15w40…just saying.

I’m sure everyone has the same issue. I have no idea what the extendable tube was meant to achieve, the design is just wrong! I guess if you filled with small bottles of oil that had a long neck it might work. Even the type 4 motor (in the T2’s) was not easy.

I did a similar thing, but with a small cordial bottle, the neck sits well down to the filler pipe so it’s well supported, and the top is cut at an angle so is close to horizontal when in place so you have a large oval shape to aim for.
I have two, one for the oil and one for the coolant level.

Need one of these to fill:

Love these old oil filler bottles!

Look cool Scott, must be plenty of options like this.

I always used the standard bottle. Never had an issue.
