Advice for tyres

Advice for tyres

Wanted five new tyres for the weekend, got some options, what do people recommend?
BFG AT $273
Bridgestone 694 $269
Coopers AT $244
Kumho AT $229
Goodyear wrangler ATR $ 229
Nexen AT $155
Maxis $154

Size 215/75/15
I was originaly going for the BFG but I'm starting to think something like the Maxis might be a more sensible option. I know you get what you pay for but for the price difference I can have a three spares. The syncro won't be doing many km's but will do a resonalbe amount of off-roading Any thoughts.
Craig,

I love my BFG's - they ride well, have great 3 ply side wall strength and have hardly worn after 15,000kms of mainly bitumen driving and the off roading I have done - mainly mud and sand has caused no problems to the tyres.

However, if the wallet is a bit tight - go for the Maxxis.

Cheers,

Scott

So thats one for BFG.

My friend put me onto Maxis, he drives off-road every weekend (mainly sand dunes/beach). For the money he thinks they've done well for him.

For me it's more about spending the money wisely rather then the value of the purchase. I do want the BFG's I'm just trying to convince myself they are the best choice.

Craig,

The BFG tyre has one very valuable feature that few other tyres have.  They have a bead protector.  When you look at a BFG fitted to a wheel, you will see that the sidewall is designed to come out past the rim.  This is a measure to avoid rim-pinch, something that can destroy even a new tyre in a second.

Craig
Kumho AT KL78      200,000plus k  2x sets over 15yrs 20/80 dirt/sealed roads
No punctures, very quiet, excellent on sand due to rounder shoulders.Replaced due to age 7yrs max rather than wear.
Replacing now at 70% worn due to bad rubber cut on trip to Lightening Ridge last week but got home ok.
Cheapest price at KMart servo at $180 each for 4 of them fit/bal.(215/75/15)
BFG stand out so I may possibly change but dont like the sharp shoulders which tend to tramline on poor bitumen.

Cheers Graham

Intresting stuff Graham, I was swinging to BFG for a moment. $180 is much cheaper than the $244 I've been quoted. I run Kumho KH15 on my T5 transporter and I've been happy with them. I'll try for a better price tomorrow on the kumho. Kmart seemed hell bent on selling me the Goodyear Wranglers.

Craig, I have not had a syncro on bfg's but do have the maxxis fitted at the moment. They are a good tyre. As far as I can tell (nothing scientific just my opinion) the bfg seems to be a stronger carcase and harder compound (better off road). The maxxis seems to hold bitumen better than the bfg at's I have driven with (better on road). The other thing to consider is the  BFG's will probably go further but then you would want them to at $120 more each! Greg

Craig, you are forgetting another tyre option.Yokohama Geolander AT/S.I purchased 4 last year 215/65/16.They cost me $205 a corner.Great looking tyre. Not as a agressive tread pattern as BFG.Very quiet on road.Excellent in the wet.Top ''car like performance '',on road.Very good in sand and mud.I believe a better option than others.Next time I will buy six!

I've got BFGs also and they are fantastic tyres but I do find them a bit noisy at lower speeds. Cruising speed, no problem. May be the case with any all terrain tyre though.

Make sure you ring every supplier in your area, price varies dramatically. Then try googling a review of the exact spec of the tyre. I found lots of people having issues with Goodyear Wrangler tyres. (While ago though so can't remember for sure)

It seems all tyre brands have their lovers and hater's. I'm steering to the Kumho's if I can get them at a good price (already have experience with the brand). It's hard to justify the extra for the BFG's on a van that's only going to do a couple of thousand Km's per year, having said that I could change my mind any moment (deep down I want the BFG).

Hi craig, I've had the coopers for almost two years now. The offroad work Ive done on them - not a great deal -  has been no problem and on the road they are super quiet an very solid.

I paid $206 each for mine, just checked but more than a year ago from a place called Jax Quickfit. I just like the look of them but i think i'd be struggling to justify them when i wear them out (if ever) now

Craig. I put a set of Maxxis 751 215/75r15 on my syncro camper about 18 months ago and couldn't be happier. They have covered 38000km, lots a dirt including a Birdsville/innaminka run. Also very happy with their sand performance during a week on Moreton island. Lots of soft sand and never looked like getting bogged. I'd estimate 15-20,000km life left. I paid $145 each from Bob jane. Another point to consider is if you damage a partly worn tyre beyond repair it will be very difficult to match the other three. Throwing away 3 bfg's would hurt.Of course if you have a decoupler that problem is solved. Good luck. Bill.

I'm sure you guys know one way to help prevent that is buy 6 new tires, then do a 6 tire, .....whoops,  'tyre' roatation scheme.
That way  they all stay equally worn, and if you destroy one, you stil have 5 well-matced evenly worn tires.   Decoupler eleminate the need to have a perfectly matching spare of course.

My local Jax Tyre outlet manager told me Michelin makes Maxxis. Good enough pedigree.
