Air Filters

If anyone is after an air filter cartridge (025 129 620B), Vintage Vee Dub Supplies in Sydney has some. These are not easy to get as most places try to sell you the cheap round type (025 129 620A).

According to Bentleys they are good for 48,000kms (presumably under normal conditions) so the cost of the true syncro oval one is spread over a considerable service life and well worth it for engine longivity. The only other disadvantage is that being a paper element they will swell up when wet and block the airflow if you are in the habit of dunking your vehicle. In that case Peter's suggested conversion in the photo archive to a tacky oiled foam washable one is worth considering. If you are prepared to carry the cleaning devices/materials it also saves carrying a spare filter if you  are travelling long distances in very dusty conditions.

You just have to seal the pre air cleaner connections, something vw did not do properly. Greg E

Roger,
Below video is what Rudi didn't do, but the rest of you chickened out on ...

Below video is what some intrepid syncronutters aspire as the minimum capability of their beast ...

Cheers.

You're quite right Phil and the high rear intake is one of the exclusive features of a Syncro that makes it so good.I did find some water getting in to the precleaner bowl and even the filter on the Cape trip for my vehicle  and it made me wonder if the joins should all be duct taped up as a precaution. However I did subsequently find one of the aircleaner clips not clamping down properly and after fixing that had no more trouble including my not so shallow Shallow River crossing a while back. Note the new T5 GP syncro is said to be good for 500mm water crossings which I think is the same as the T3.
Cheers
Roger
