Air Flow Meter

Continuing problems trying to locate the rattling sound emitting from the passenger side of the engine bay. My mechanic is now seeking out a air flow meter which he thinks is the problem.
Question: What is an air flow meter, what does it do, and could it be possible that it makes a rattling sound? Any help much appreciated. Will keep you all posted of future developments from the rattle front.

Anything is possible but the AirFlow Meter (AFM) would not be my first suspect in the case of the rattling something.

First of all, I am guessing the AFM is on the driver's side on RHD Syncros. You said your rattle comes from the passenger side. The AFM is that silver looking box on top of the aircleaner/filter housing.

Doubtful that it is the AFM.

They are expensive and getting hard to buy.
If you get another one, keep the old one.
Where are you located?

Thanks Ben and Phill

Thats pretty much my feeling as well. I think the mechanic is barking up the wrong tree on this one. Initially he thought it was the Hall Sender, then the distributor, now the AFM. Hard to get to specialist, knowledgeable VW mechanic when you live in far off country Mallacoota. 500+ k's to both Sydney or Melb.
