Aircon In Telstra Syncro

My ex Telstra van has an after market aircon (Prestige of Sydney-label on knobs) which was
installed at time of purchase by Telstra. It has been wired up so that the radiator fan comes
on the moment the aircon is turned on and stays on continuously while the unit is running.
When the aircon is turned off, the fan only comes on when the engine is hot, from sitting at
the lights in summer. So far so good. However, when the weather is very hot, and the aircon
has been running for a short period of time, especially when sitting at the lights, the fan
switches to "Cyclone" mode and makes a noise like the van is going to take off. As far as I
know, this high speed setting is designed for extreme temperature conditions. Has my aircon
been wired up incorrectly? Should the fan be on continuously or can I have it rewired so that
it only comes on when it is hot and only at the normal speed. How does the factory air
operate.

Please Help.
RE: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Aircon In Telstra Syncro

Hi Nick,

I can't help but I can say I have the same problem. Also, as far as I know there as no 'factory air' pre-se in any T3 - VW had them installed by a number of companies including prestige.  BTW the air cons like yours (and mine) are notoriously bad. There is a company at Milpara (Autofrost I think they're called) that install aircons that actually work but they'll cost you up to $4,000 depending on the version you get - but they know what they are doing with T3s I believe. I too hope for a solution to the 'cyclone'.

Cheers Murray

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Aircon In Telstra Syncro
I can’t help either except to say that I’ve experienced the cyclone on my T3 and I have no aircon unit. It’s only happened once or twice and I just assumed it was a higher speed for the normal fan. I do have a dirty big bullbar and spare wheel on the front which doesn’t help airflow.

If anyone has any experience of an aftermarket aircon for the T3 that they’ve had fitted in recent years I’d love to hear about it. It’s the real downside to any warm weather trips not having it. Mine does have the 1.6 turbo diesel which would struggle with an aircon unit though.

Nick,

The fan has two speeds and functions as you described.  The Cyclone speed comes in when the thermal load increases and this is normal.  There is a resistor behind the grill that allows the higher speed to kick in.  I must confess that my resistor is cactus, so it runs at Cyclone whenever it cuts in.  Scares the bejasus out of pedestrians and nearby motorists when it comes on at traffic lights.  I must get round to that one day......   But in the meanwhile, I have developed a faint whine in the transmission under load, and I think that will have to take precedence for now.

Nick,
What you describe is normal, when you turn the on the air, the fan comes on at low speed, this is to provide some air flow the the condensor, both my T3's have air and they are both wiried up like this.

I installed the air in my Ute last year from a wrecked bus, and just copied how it was wired up in the old bus, it works well, except for very hot days, it then struggles to keep up, it is the type that sits on the dash, evaporator is mounted above the glovebox.
I had Auto frost in Sydney install Air into my Caravelle when I bought it, it is the roof console type and works great, for memory it was close to $3500.00 fitted, and that was 10 years ago.
I have a van that I am parting out at the moment that has the roof console air if anyone is interested.
Regards
Dave

Dave, first dibs on the roof console. Can you email me with what parts are available and what you want for them.

I’ll try to make buying it a bit easier than meeting you on the Hume in a place I don’t know....

Cheers

Gary,
The Air is a complete kit, it is still in the van, $1000.00 the lot.
It is a bit of a job to remove, was hoping the buyer would help, then they will know what goes where, if you know what I mean.

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Aircon In Telstra Syncro
Fair enough, sounds like a job for someone a bit closer than me. I think I’d need to help remove it to stand any chance of fitting to another vehicle. I’ll have to look for a wrecker a bit closer to home.

Cheers
