I know this is off the syncro topic, but can anyone enlighten me wether there is such a thing as an aircooled t3 doka in the country? I would love to get my hands on a doka, air cooled or watercooled. The other question is has anyone got a watercooled one with non gen air con? With the reduced cabin size (over a van)does it actually cool the cabin? Greg E
1st item there was a article around 1990 in a
magazine where at valla around a camp fire with one of the muller boys they
discussed about converting a doka to a air cooled unit i think it was done
but dont quote me if you are reading this steven from kombi rescue does it ring
a bell
2nd item i have a doka with aftermarket a/c which i
think was done by a company in millperra for vw aus.providing you tint
your windows run the latest gas it will cool the cab but the cooling is
felt by the front more than the back as the outlets are only in the dash, i feel
that the evaporative unit in the cab is a bit undersized for the job if you
compare a/c in a falcon or commodore. i installed a larger compreesor in mine
when the 1st one leaked it did not make a large difference as it is the
evaporater unit that provides the cooling air, with a temperarure probe test it
was showing 6degrees the problem is the rate of cooling to the heating effect of
the heat tranfer from sun light through the glass into the cab hence the window
tint apart from that i would not be with out it.

Thanks Bob, so does that mean vw did not make dokas when they were making aircooled t3 vans? As for the A/C, my van has non gen air which gets down to 2 degrees at the vents but it does not cool the cabin. I was thinking I could swap it into a doka if would be worth it. The thinking behind this is getting rid of the modern family car and having a nice doka to get around in, so good A/C is a must. Might have to look at a caravelle with factory a/c.

Thanks for the tip Ben but I need a back seat for the little terrors. It is a shame to see a rare single cab syncro get stripped though. Any pics? Can't spare 5k just to block the drive way. I can hear it now - straight out of the castle -" I'll need to move that syncro to get to that doka to get the single cab out." Greg E

I wouldn't know what a factory ac was for a dual cab. Most acs are from the US which didn't have dual cabs.

Phill, I think they were fitting aftermarket behr units (indash) in dealerships. Was it an option on Tristar? Bob if I bought a doka I would just swap it from the syncro. Best thing for a van is one of those god ugly fans on the dash. I drove down from cairns in 40 degree heat with one of those straight in my face worked a treat.

Greg, Phill and all
GoWesty has this Tristar for sale, which has aircon, even with vents to the rear - check image 15 & 16 of 22 - very nice installation - can't be sure if it is factory - it differs slightly from the Caravelle factory aircon vent housings.
And yes, in 1979 VW released the DOKA and Single Cab in Germany as aircooled.

If you look at the JustKampers Catalogue T25's even came out with an
air-cooled 1600 cc motor which would be basically the same as in my
71 kombi.
My that would take a bit of getting moving with a full payload in a T25.
