hi everyone,

i'm mailing you to get some information for a belgian 16" syncro driver, Abert Willems
For the moment his syncro is in south africa, as he's been travelling from time to time in africa the last years. In januari his car is coming back to europe, he'll have it checked and partly nenewed and now he's thinking of transporting it to australia.
But he heard the maximum period he could leave his car there would be only one year. And he's not allowed to leave the country without his car he says.
When he goes to the australian custom to collect the car once it's there, he'll get a stamp on some document he'll have to keep in the car. But he wanted to know if they keep trace of him having brought a car in australia by also putting a stamp on his passport ? He's planning to travell for three months in australia, fly back home for three months in belgium, and then getting back to australia for another three months. But if he has to stay with his car all the time, he con't do that.Who should Albert take contact with to sort all this out ?

Another question of his is where to find an insurance for his car for travelling during a year ? As he's not on the internet, he needs a fax number. Who could give him that ?

Finally Albert was wondering if there are no ferrys from australia to new zealand ?

He would really like to see all of your country with his syncro, but he thinks it won't be easy to get all the arrangements done. As he's a globetrotter in the first place,  he would even consider hiring a camping van for three months, a ford transit diesel for instance.
So please help me helping him to work this project out for him. He's been all around africa and northern america with volkswagens, starting with beetle in the sixtees, changin gearboxes on campsites and all that sh*t...
I wouldn't like to recieve a postcard from him reading his hired ford transit does well in australia....

Very premature, but who's willing to give him a warm welcome ? Any suggestions on tours etc..

Mike,

I'd suggest you get your friend to talk to Joachim Dietlicher
(E-mail Address(es): uluru2002@aol.com. ) who did a similar trip last year, although they didn't leave and return like he wants to.  He should be able to help with most other questions.

Alternatively, and depending when he is coming, I am considering putting my Syncro on the market in the 1st half of next year (I'm rather tempted by the new turbo diesel T5's, which also become available in all wheel drive here next year).  The cost of buying, then reselling after a year may be less than shipping here and back, and would avoid the customs complications.

I'll have a clearer decision about that in the New Year, but if you or he wants any preliminary info about the vehicle you could pmail me on breed@bigpond.net.au .

hello mike,

we are joachim and jasmin from germany. we travelled australia in our syncro from january 2004 until september 2004.
our experiences are written on our homepage http://hometown.aol.de/uluru2002 (in german only)

some short answers:

1) the document you've mentioned is called a "Carnet de passage en douane". yes, the maximum period for a Carnet is
12 month normally (but can be extended under certain conditions). i've just been reading through the conditions of
the Carnet and there's NO point which declares that one has to stay with the car all the time! the Carnet can be
obtained from a local automobile club only (in our case ADAC Germany = Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club,
Zentrale, Grenzverkehr, Am Westpark 8, 81373 München). i believe you have a local club in belgium too. a booklet
with all the regulations should be available there.

2) yes, he'll get a stamp (an important one for the Carnet regulations) into the Carnet after arriving in down under.
yes, he must carry it with the car all the time. and yes, he'll get a stamp into his passport too - BUT only for himself,
not for the car as well.

3) insurance. as far as we know (and know from other travellers too) the only way to get an insurance as a
non australian is to become member of "Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia", PO Box 3327, Hamilton D.C.,
    NSW 2303, Phone (00 61) (0)2 4965 4480, www.cmca.com.au
only with the membership of cmca it's possible to get insurance at "lumley insurance", www.lumley.com.au

4) he has to consider customs AND quarantine for his car.

5) yes, it's a fair bit of work to be done. but we can only encourage him to do it with his own syncro.
the best vehicle for such a project, WE believe.

6) we'd like to help more. please feel free to give albert our numbers
    telefon: 0049 7633 807963 fax: 0049 1212677050277
would be easier to communicate in german, but we'll try our best in english too

7) would be nice from the syncro_t3_australia group to get in contact with albert too. we've gotten to know
some wonderful people and have spent very nice with them through the group!

regards joachim and jasmin
