Andy,
 
Tony is under way and is getting longer stretches before it falters.  Alf Anderson thinks that it is the injector O rings allowing unmetered air into the cylinders. 
 
The broad plan at the moment is that Tony will order a set of O rings and get them sent to your place, then limp along until he gets to Ceduna.  (At least he is on the way home!)

Ah, that would certainly explain the symptoms. 
 
He still isn't far out of Adelaide.  The only course that I can think of is for him to limp back to Adelaide and go to a good VW mechanic.  Do you know of any reliable place that he could take it to?
