Annex Tent

Hi all,

Does anyone know if you can still buy Kombi tents (free standing that attached to the side
door and seal) that would fit a syncro? If so where from (I'm in Sydney)? The short coming
with my annex is that you can't drive off and leave it set up so I'm thinking of something
that will stand alone. Of if somebody wants to sell one they don't use perhaps?

Cheers Murray
Murray,

Yonks ago, several tent manufacturers made such tents, usually square in plan form and a single slope on the top (as opposed to a pitch).  You erected the tent, drove the vehicle up to the high side and threw the flap over the top of the vehicle, securing it to the other side by ropes.

They could be made to seal against the sliding door.  I had such a tent and put a mesh panel into the side that faced the vehicle.  The mesh panel was cut out to mate with the door opening and I used magnetic strip (used in the seals of refrigerator doors) to make contact with the vehicle.  This kept most of the flying insects out.  Simple and effective.  And, as you say, you could drive away and leave the tent standing.  You just have to remember to use guy ropes in place of the vehicle to keep the vehicle side erect.

Murray, these kombi tents come up on ebay from time to time, you may
need some patience and persistance though waiting for another to come
along. For example, do an ebay search for item 4591854303, there are
some good photos of one ... this sold almost a year ago. Good luck.
Cheers.

This is similar to what I have used on a T2 Kombi in the past but with a few differences, which detract from its functionality.

The one shown on eBay has a pitched top running at 90 degrees to the side of the van.  This makes it very hard to seal against rain.  The one I had had a flat top which sloped away from the van substantially, so that's where the rain went.  (Remember rain?)  The high side (van side) had a flap which could be closed when free-standing or abdulled to provide shade.  With the van against the tent, this flap went over the top of the van.  Any rain that fell on the flap ran off; some ran over the top of the tent and some went over the far side of the van.  I never got rain through the tent to van junction.

Inside this flap was a mesh flap.  Because the van came to within a few inches of the mouth of the tent, this mesh flap did not need to be tunnel shaped.  The opening in the mesh was slightly larger than the open side door.  I sewed the plastic magnetic strip into the aperture and this connected to the top, front and bottom of the door opening.  The fourth side connected to the outside of the side door when open.  There is a gap between the side door and the body side and I carried a length of foam insulation tube to stuff into the gap.  This kept the insects out.

I used it a lot and it all worked very well.  It was made of light duck, by the way, not nylon.  It is not uncommon for the locals to do something better than the factory and this is one such case.

Yes, I used to have a T2 version similar to what Les describes. Likewise, I think it was
better than the one on ebay (wow, still getting $550 for that). I recall some members of
the aussieveedubbers forum discussing them so I'll have a look there too. If I recall, with
mine the only drawback was that it was a bit bulky when folded. I'm sure mine had the
floor built in but I could be wrong. Wish I'd kept it now althouh I don't know that it would
fit a T3 and particularly with the syncro extra height!

cheers Murray
