Another new member looking for a syncro camper

Hi,
My name is Bruce Morphett from Adelaide.
Looking specifically for a Trakka 90-92.
Wish list: diff locks, decoupler etc.
Plan to upgrade to Subaru EJ25, transmission, brakes, suspension etc.

From 1997-2002 I owned a Syncro camper(Safari, Adelaide), I loved it but sold it when it got to c.140k kms & viscous couple started tightening up. Also, since then I have come to the view that the Trakka is a far better conversion.

Currently I have a Toyota Hilux 4WD extra cab with a Trayon camper.  http://www.trayon.com/
It's a good setup, but I am missing the sheer versatility, maneuverability, convenience, quick setup, compactness, integration etc. etc. of a Syncro camper.  I am guessing that with suitable modifications & upgrades a syncro will be a Nissan & Toyota killer!

Saw Ben's Subaru EJ25 engine conversion & Scott's (?) Subaru H6. would be interested in how the EJ25 & EZ30 compare, particularly on fuel economy.

Cheers,
Bruce.

Bruce,

The Trakka has its good points but, along with just about every other conversion plus the caravan/motor-home market, the wiring is very crude, about on a par with any incompetent amateur.  Just be prepared to rectify or replace it.  I have the original wiring diagram if you find a Trakka.

Les

Thanks Les,
My plan is eventually upgrade throughout, eg new fridge, possibly a Novakool. If a rewire is needed, so be it.

Hi Bruce,

even with a standard engine a bit more clearance and diff lock the syncro is better than any Jap machine I've ever owned. I put it down to rear engine and having a good view of what trouble you're getting into. From reports I've read the 2.5 Subi will give 11-12l per 100km, but 3.0 is up around 16l per 100km. 2.5 has to be the engine of choice in my opinion. I keep waiting for my waterboxer to die but it's going better than ever at 312 kms.

Good luck in your search, they're become as rare as rocking horse ....

Does anyone have a contact email or phone number for David Leibmann?

His emails are bouncing and I find that my records are incomplete, so I don’t have a line of contact.

Thanks

Les

Mark is on the money there.

The bigger 6cylsuby lumps are at tad thirsty and have a tendency to be a bit too powerful for our weaker tannys.

The 2.5 is good for 160bhp and very economical, it fits better and apparently runs cooler meaning it can run leaner and hence less fuel.

Mine is the old school H6 2.7L donk which is only rated at 147bhp.

Its a thirsty bugger too. Go for the 2.5L - there are millions of them floating around the country so if you kill one - go to the local  wreckers and pick up another - cheap.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Hart,
A Westy would be great, but they were never imported into this country (except on very rare occasions), and with Australia's import rules, the only  way to get one in is to own one in the UK or South Africa (RHD) for at least a year then bring it back on return to Aus.

Mark & Scott,
Looks like it's the EJ25. I figured that anyway looking at the Greenvehicleguide http://greenvehicleguide.gov.au/GVGPublicUI/home.aspx
My Hilux D4D uses 10.5 -13 L/100 kms on diesel depending on conditions so the Syncro should be slightly cheaper to run given the price of Diesel compared to petrol here.

I've had some correspondence with Richard Jones in the UK and he believes the T3 transmission will not cope with much more than about 200Nm torque. If that's true, it rules out both the EZ30 & the EE20 diesel (350Nm)

Has anyone been considering the Subaru EE20 diesel & know of any done in Aus?  I have seen that  Smallcar Performance & Greg Blachon of Boxeer have done conversions. An exciting prospect! Looks like an expensive conversion with intercooler and I understand that diesel Subarus have electric power steering, so no power steering pump.

Bruce.

David,

Your @yahoo email address is now coming up as “probably forged”.  I know, this sound like a contradiction but this is usually followed by Yahoo deleting the address permanently.

Please email me direct and from whatever address you have other than the Yahoo email address.
