Any recommendations for good tyres?

Hi all

My family and I are planning a desert trip (Innamincka and surrounds) at the end of June and I'm finding it difficult to get advice on suitable tyres. I currently have a relatively new set of Nankang 205R14C. Great for road and sand use (lots of both around Brisbane), but was wondering if I might need something a bit more off-roadish. Have scoured the archives but am none the wiser. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Steve
Hi Steve

The choice of 14inch tyres is very limited. Most people tend to find a set of 15inch wheels and then you have a much greater choice of all terrain and/or a more aggressive tread pattern. I'm not sure what is best for sand but lots of people run BF Goodrich all terrain with good results. There are some good all terrain tyres from other brands which are cheaper. There is lots of advice about wheels and tyres on US and UK sites that can be found with a bit of googling

Finding the wheels that have the right offset and load rating is the tricky bit.

I used a set of Toyo Country for my 14" wheels. Slightly agressive but extremely good on the tar and in sand and logging tracks. Bit noisy on the freeway but great grip and long lasting. I would recommend them.

Hi the toyo tyre overall diameter is much smaller than the 205R14 hence affecting gearing and when driving at 100kmh increasing rpm by @300 the kumho 205R14 tyre is very close to original michelin size tyre and is light truck rated and a good all round tyre..maybe worth you considering
