I have a new Brickwerks Syncro tailpipe to replace the rusted out one on the van. Hence I was sniffing around Bentley and Etka for the gasket part number. In the process I see that there are two part numbers for the catalyst, one being marked "AUS".
Is this Australian specific? If so why? Did Australia once lead the world in strict emissions regulations?

Yes Jon there was a Aus specific catalyst, Phill has raised this before. I have never heard any one state wether it is a higher or lower grade to the one used in other markets (including Cali). I would speculate that it would have been a lower grade as California has led the world before T3 came around. You would be lucky to find one and probably not willing to pay the price. Genuine cats get very expensive after everyone takes their cut.

Thanks Greg. Seems strange that Australia got specific equipment when VW exported to so many other countries:
- Catalyst
- Radiator?
- Option code 608 code "Australian specific equipment"
I can understand the radiator requirement but surely areas like Spain, Italy, Africa, the Middle East get a similar climate? In fact I haven't seen any reference to other countries getting specific equipment. Do these exist? Actually thinking about it I may have seen some reference to Scandinavian / cold weather gear. But why would Australia get special treatment?
Would be interesting to know what an Australia catalyst contained or didn't contain. I did doubt that it would be higher spec. I see Go Westy still sell a more effective and expensive catalyst that will pass California emissions testing, the implication being that their standard offering will not.

It would have been dictated by the
prevailing emissions ADR at the time that the vehicle was introduced in
Australia .
Yes, Australia
has, and still does, lead the world in many things. In respect of vehicle
safety design and engineering, we always have in recent decades.

Most of the M608 refer to ADR options like seat belts, child restraints, cat, labelling etc.
The radiator was an option for warm countries where ac is likely to be fitted. I don't think that all T3s in Australia had the larger radiator. Some of the early ones didn't. Like most of the options, it just depends on which box was ticked on the order sheet.
A lot of countries have their own unique specifications. The UK appears that nearly anything goes.
I'd like to know whether TriSars were approved for general import or is Hart's just a one off? It must have been an expensive exercise if it had to go through the general import ADR compliance for just one vehicle.
