Aussie dollar strong time to buy De coup??

Hey guys just a few questions if anyone has any advice as me and my mate are thinking of going all out and taking the next step forward (or backward). . .Who should I deal with (Go Westy)?  Will I have to pay extra tax because it will be over $1000AUD?  Who do you send your old De coupler return with? (aus post or...?) and any more advice etc. . .

Bart, hi, certainly the right time to buy, as long as you source the goods from the US. Isn’t it funny that everybody talks about the strong Aussi $ although it kept its parity against the Euro. Your guess if our $ is stronger or the US $ crumbles! Anyway, makes not much difference, important is that you get an invoice under 1000 AUD. That allows you to import the goods free of Import Duty and free of GST.

Please make double sure that you don’t go over $ 1000 AUD or same happens to you what happened to me. I imported 3 alu drop sides for my DOKA Total weight 34 kg invoice was Euro 39.- Sea freight was $ 90 and because of weight and dimensions I had to have a customs agent to clear the goods total clearing costs wait for it $ 1236 AUD !! (they charge i.e. $ 16 fuel surcharge, $ 14 road tolls $ 100 inspection fees ,,after steam cleaning etc etc ) Anyway, I will bring those gold plated drop sides to MEL. next month..... Hartmut

Hi guys

Here's a link to Bernd Jager's shop which isn't always easy to find via google, his prices have been good for some stuff i got quotes on recently although he only takes direct transfer payments. He will sell export prices though so without the 19% vat which even though the euro is strong is pretty cheap. He emails in English. You place the order and then he confirms the price. He doesn't take paypal though.

I'm not sure you would persuade any of the suppliers to put down a lower price for a Decoupler as technically it is fraud. You might get away with a VC as the price is a bit closer to the $1000AUD but hey it is worth asking.

I bought a VC from Classic parts in Germany and got stung for the import duty and GST. I did the paperwork myself though rather than use an agent. It was a bit painful but not too bad.

Let us know how you go.

Hi bart

It's funny you should bring up buying a decoupler as I just ordered one from syncro-services in germany today. Even with the aussie dollar being strong in regards to the U.S the decouplers offered by gowesty,van-cafe and the like still cost atleast $200-250 more than those sold by syncro services. Paid $1231.87au for mine including shipping costs and paypal fees. Onoly thing is you may have to order one in advance if buying from syncro-services as their decouplers are always in high demand (waiting list)

I also asked Henning at syncro-services to reduce the amount on the invoice to save me customs duties/gst and here's the response I got.

Hi Erik,

Regarding the invoice I am really sorry but as we have the payment over this amount we need to do the customers declaration for this as well. If I take another sum I won´t get back the 19 % VAT we have to pay for purchasing the parts and (and this is more important) get a not matching case in our books what our tax consultant will not be able to book. Sorry for that, I really understand your matter and would like to help you but I have to fill out the tax documents and there´s your address on it and if it doesn´t match the invoice we as company can get in trouble.

You could try gowesty and see if they will lower the prcie for customs but it is a risky business when selling new goods as transactions can easily be traced. What does work well is splitting up items into individual parcels if the total cost combined exceeds $1000. kind of a bugger with a decoupler. Cheers, erik

Hey guys, why not buy even cheaper from here: http://www.syncro-services.com/index_modi_eng.html
? :) They have experience with overseas shipping aswell.

.martin

P.S.: I personally know the manufacturer of these decouplers and also
have one of those in my syncro - quality engineering.

I don't know if it has changed, but the US made decouplers had bronze bearings instead of rollers like the Bernd Jager or Syncro Hospital.

Hi, I just installed a syncro services decoupler and got the same response re reducing the cost on the invoice below $1K. It's probably hard to circumvent customs law in Germany. That said, I've ordered two items from overseas above that threshold recently, and in neither case have I been charged duty, so it's a bit hit and miss, I'd say, whether they pick it up. Perhaps labelling the packages 'used car parts' helped? Francesca.

You are not alone as far as duty and brokerage fees are concerned. I
have found that the best legal means to lower duty is by asking the
vendor to exclude or at the very least separate the shipping cost in
the invoice.

In the US, we have an exemption which may be applied separately for
each shipment. The packages do have to arrive on different days. In
cases when this is possible, the extra shipping cost far offsets the
total duty.

Sometimes, you get lucky. I came through US Customs one time and fully
declared the $1300 of merchandise I had with me. The exemption was
only for $800. Customs officer looks over my clearly detailed
declaration. Looks at me and says, "you're over the exemption. Thanks
for being honest. Go on ahead." No duty due. Ship around Christmas
time. Lots of stuff gets passed through simply because there are too
packages coming through.

Over the last 6 months I purchased a lot of syncro parts from overseas. I did notice an inconsistency in the way different goods were processed. I bought 15" rhein alloys from the U.S. which were well above dutiable exemption and on arrival in australia I was notified by phone of duties/tax I had to pay and everything was cleared. I did not have to fill out any declaration forms in this case and was not charged broker fees by my calculations. Using the same method of postage I purchased some upgrades for my syncro over exemption and this time I had to clear the goods myself.

I know that you can avoid paying import tax if your items are exempt in the tariff classification guide. For example farm machinery and spare parts for tractors etc are not taxed understandably whereas private car parts are. Even though I'm quite certain most customs inspectors would not know whether a decoupler is for use in agricultural equipment or your syncro it could still be traced back to the seller if customs should become suspicious.

Hi Francesca,  labelling the parcel “used car parts” won’t help much as the goods will then have to be steam cleaned.  AS long as the parcel arrives somehow at your address it’s not all that bad, it becomes very interesting once you have to clear any goods (sea or air freight)      Hartmut

Well new or used doesn't matter because it still comes down to the price on the invoice.

Francesca.

Have just been advised by Henning that the syncro-services decouplers are built to the same specifications as the original decoupled syncro's. The ONLY difference being that the newly manufactured parts used are of better quality. The tooth wheels are thicker making it stronger than the original. Apparently these are the best quality decouplers on the market. I stand to be corrected in my assumption that needle roller bearings are not used in the orignal design? erik

Well done Eric - is yours a needle roller bearing type?

Decoupler just arrived from syncro-services. com. Am very happy with the quality of workmanship and didn't have to pay any customs duty/gst having it posted by DHL airmail. Seems customs didn't check the invoice!

Well new or used doesn't matter because it still comes down to the price on the invoice.
