Axle shaft bolts coming loose.

One for the brains trust...

There are six of 8mm bolts that attach the axle shaft / CV joint to the gear box.

Mine keep coming loose.

I am using high tensile 8mm bolts (hex end for 6mm allen key) and spring washers.

Last time I did them up as tight as I could (within reason) but to no avail.

After only 150kms....loose again.

Any ideas?

I had that problem... Although the washers are kind of serrated rather than spring.
Anyway, I pulled each one out and cleaned the threads thoroughly with degreaser and then carefully swapped the internal threads as well. I had got grease all over them during a cv joint overhaul and that was the problem. Now they are all good. It may also be the spring washers vs serrated though?
Cheers

That last post was meant to say 'swabbed' the internal threads, not swapped. Obviously being careful not to have degreaser etc running off the swab into the joint! I just used a load of cotton wool ear cleaner thingies.

Use serrated vw washers rather than spring washers. See link;

I use a bit of lock tight on mine and never gave them a second thought so I better get under and have a look ?

Never had one coming loose but always use a torque wrench. You can't really tighten them with an allen key. Proper tool would be a socket /extension plus torque wrench.
Also serrated washers as per Yurik.

As others have said, check the torque  is correct and use the serrated original style washers not spring washers.

If that does not fix the problem, it's worth checking the faces of the flanges and CV's are clean/flat and go together correctly. A bit of dirt or damage on either face that stops them sitting flat together can cause a bit of movement that will work the bolts loose.

I do not use a thread locker on them, a tiny bit of grease on a clean thread so they torque up correctly.

Hi Peter,
Years ago when asked about eliminating issue of loose or lost bolts, Rudi offered ...
Inspect all bolts and serrated washers for wear and tare, replace with genuine original any that look worn/damaged.
Mandatory. Meticulous attention to de-rusting/detail cleaning/degreasing/drying of ALL mating surfaces of components prior to reinstall.
No lubrication. No loctite.
Apply correct torque progressively/evenly.
Cheers.
Ken

HEY kEN hope all is going well mate yes well if you do a google search on any topic you get a million answers its just finding the one that suits
Have always used locktite because I have had a big bottle that's lasted many years.
I was told any thing that tensioned should be lubricated on all mating surfaces ?
If I put something together that I may have to pull apart after a long period exposed to moisture or salt or not its far easier if you threadease or locktite it but that's just what I do not anything I recommend or promote as the final word..
Cheers mate pete
ps when are you coming back to visit up here

Hi Pete,
No plans for SEQ trip but would be great to see you again if things changed.
Heh give Rudi a call or drop in on him, I'm sure he'd love a chat on this topic.
Cheers from NSWCC.
