Basics, decoupler

Hello All.

My first Post.
Today was the day i finally picked up my first syncro. Its come from sydney to perth and is now sitting proudly in my driveway. Ive been after one for a long time and now i have one.
There will probably be many questions over the coming months and thankyou all now in advance for the answers.
Im sure the information i require is archived out there somewhere but im asking anyway.
The van i bought had a full drivetrain rebuild in 2006 with receipts totalling 12k. When this was done by a guy called justin fisher i believe in melbourne. Anyway. On the receipts its got that the van had a decoupler fitted along with recon gearbox etc.
Ive got 3 knobs on the 4wd part on the dash. The left one controls the aircon, The right one i think does the rear diff lock as the green light comes on when pulled. Im thinking that the middle one maybe controls the decoupler? Ive pulled it and there appears to be no light coming on,should there be? What is a simple test to perform to check whether the decoupler is operating?
Any other info on what to look for or check when getting a new van would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Anthony
Anthony, yes when you pull the knob out the green light should come on.Maybe a blown globe??Put your head under and check that it is connected up(electrical). It plugs into a plug that comes from behind charcoal cannister. Also check the vacumm actuator sometimes they get sticky(diff lock and decoupler). To test the decouplers operation use the VC test.
1.On a level surface, just raise rear of vehicle off ground with trolley jack.
2.Choc front wheels with a piece of timber or house bricks
3.with decoupler diengaged(knob in),start engine,select 1st gear,realise clutch slowly.Engine should stall.
4.Pull knob out, light should come on,select 1st,realise clutch slowly. You should climb up over the chocs.Depending on how aggressive your VC is will govern how you climb up over the chocs but you should feel a definate difference between ingage and disengaged

Anthony and group, after reading through my last post I realised that I have made a mistake with the testing of a decoupler.
With decoupler disengaged, when releasing the clutch, the rear wheels should spin.Sorry for that confusion.
I did get to test my new decoupler good this weekend with a wet and muddy weekend down Jarvis Bay.The bus went really well on road and on some muddy tracks. This is my last VW powered trip away. The ol WBX has been good to me.

Ben.

Yes did the test.
Knob in 2 wheel drive only.
Knob out (sounds iffy) front wheels pulling the jack along.
Brilliant
