Batteries

I am compiling a list of suitable batteries and would like some data from syncro owners for standard fitment batteries. The original battery is a DIN66L (191 915 105M) although the smaller capacity DIN55 is usable. The maximum height is 175mm. This is the problem.

I would like as many details as possible including price, lifespan and any problems. eg

Federal  691MF         DIN65L  Silver Calcium   $290  Lifespan 7 years (requires ledge spacer) Recommended
Delkor  DIN66D                                                     $176

I will post the details on my web.

Hey Phill, mine recently died and I replaced the din66 with a mf55 gold from here. http://www.onlinebatteries.com.au/supercharge-mf55-p-165.html
$150. Was sick of shoe horning the 66 in and not really worried about capacity with a massive house battery on hand. Greg E

Does the clamp sit on the ledge OK?

The MF66 is only $14 dearer and onlinebatteries is only 2kms from here.

Clamp fits fine. I have my winch main switch, A/C fuse box and mains cuircut breaker in the battery box. The extra room was important to me and the only thing it really does is turns over the starter motor. I would imagine your trucks having one battery you would be trying to get as big a battery as possible in the hole. Greg E

Phill,
Starting battery when van was bought ...
NRMA 3552 - DIN style Sealed Calcium CCA 500, RC 90. 242Lx173Wx175H. Still functional, no problem.

Present starting battery ...
Federal 9AGM48 - DIN66 - Sealed AGM - CCA 760, 70Ah, RC120, 278Lx175Wx190H. Still clears the underside of the seat swivel, but required my half width battery cover to be raised approx. 15mm so it laid flat again.
Goto: http://www.federalbatteries.com.au/9AGM48/ Quoted $390 supply only from Federal. Supplied & delivered Dec 2009 $280 by http://www.tuggerahlakesbatteries.com.au/

Hi Phill,

Mt 1990 Trakka Syncro has a CCA500 RC90 that fits neatly under drivers seat. A 12 Volt Deep Cycle DC5 90AH encased under rear seat. Both batteries have performed problem free in the year I have owned the van. Sorry no other details on when and for what cost they were installed for.

Cheers Dave

Phill. I've got din65l mf in both my vans. The window van battery is about 5 years old and still going strong. I bought it from battery world for about $150. Was in port macquarie a few weeks ago and the local Battery world had a free testing sign out so had it tested. It tested at almost full cca specs. I run a 130watt solar panel on the roof full time through a smart charge controller so the battery sits at full charge all the time. Like Greg its also in Parrallel with a big 100ah house battery via a Redarc battery isolator. Unless the din 65 is less than 12.6 volts it is not isolated so both batteries start the car, hence the starter battery is not working very hard at all.
Two things kill batteries. Sulphation of the plates and shedding of the active material on the plates which reduces capacity of the battery and the build up of shedded material on the bottom of the battery eventually causes a short. This is a bit of a long winded way of saying battery life is more about maintaining the battery at full charge and avoiding deep cycling. Rather than spend $300 on a battery i,d spend $150 on a battery and $150 on a CTEK multi stage battery charger when the vehicle sits idle for longer periods. Bill
Dave,

Do you know the brand?

Hi Phill. I just replaced my starter battery with the same one that had been in the vehicle for over 5 years. It is a SuperCharge Gold MF66. 277x175x175. Fits very neatly in the battery cavity and is held in place by the L shaped bracket. 3 year warranty. Cost me $180 from Autobarn who are the local agents.

I also recently installed a Varta 956002 deep cycle battery. Put in a swivel seat to get some more height but the passenger seat still does not go back all the way. Have it hooked up to the car battery with a traxide unit to prevent discharge of the car battery. Peter from Port.

I`ll check tomorrow in daylight and let you know the brands
Dave

Syncro Battery Data
Thanks for this Phil -could I remind members that the rest of your site is well worth a look.
In particular the dimensions for front CV joint protectors is most useful for me as I  noticed some time ago  that both mine, which  were part of the attraction of buying my vehicle, had been cut off just below the rivetts. To quote Craig Robertson I just can't explain what happened. I can only guess it happened to facilitate a repair or perhaps during a wheel alignment. Seems I should take a leaf from Hart's book and spend more time under my vehicle.
Anyway thanks to your site I now have the dimensions to buy suitable replacement rubber  so I am much obliged.
Cheers

Syncro Battery Data
Hi Folks,
My last two batteries have only lasted 12 months ( replaced under warranty ).
They're never run flat, and seem to be fine until dying a rapid death in winter.
Is there a known issue with Syncro's where they don't charge properly but the
alternator light doesn't show ?
I have a deep cycle battery that's linked to a 20w solar panel on my roof to prolong
it's life expectancy. Can I hook up the starter battery to this system also ? Runs through
a controller.

Mark

Mark,

T3 batteries, including Syncro, last at least as long and frequently longer than batteries installed in an engine bay; this is due to the sheltered environment compared with the thermal assault in the engine bay.

You appear to have a specific problem with either under-charging and/or a serious parasitic drain.  Start with measuring the alternator input when running and also check to see if there is any drain with everything shut down.

As a side issue, battery terminals should always be kept shiny clean and coated with petroleum jelly.

Part 2:

A Syncro system, running to spec, does not need supplementary input.

Because my Syncro does not get much running, I regularly bring the battery up to 100% via a smart charger.  Smart chargers are expensive but, in my case, I have resurrected a number of otherwise dead batteries.

....or over charging. Volt meter across battery terminals and increase engine revs. Are we just talking starting battery? Is your isolator working correctly? If it is not going gradually going flat then the alt is probably charging it. Over charging will murder batteries. Generally two things can happen to an alt to make this happen. Firstly the regulator could fail and cause excessive voltage to go through the battery. Secondly a diode could fail causing ac current through the battery, this should bring the light on. A new regulator can be fitted with the alt still in place. Greg E

Hi Mark

On installing a 80w solar panel (PV) last year I also installed a Powertech MP3 129 battery controller as recomended by Jaycar.
Works just fine and gives me a constant readout of what's going on between PV and house battery plus daily input from PV.
However on our big trip to Kimberley recently there were days down south where we had very long driving days with no sun.So no power to the house battery.
This seemed an awful waste of alternator power, of which there was plenty.
Another trip to Jaycar came up with a unit called an 'Invertek' a different type of 'Battery Management Control System' which simply connects between both batteries and basicaly sends spare power after charging the starting battery to the house battery.
I havent installed it yet so can't comment on its use, I only hope that it works as it wasn't cheap at $220.

Good luck
Graham

Thanks Graham,

I am just looking at getting solar panels for my camper and have been looking at what I need from jaycar as they have a great special on 80W and 120W PV. Does anyone know what size is best for power and storage or bolting on the roof?
