Booster Upgrade question

If the van has a QLD engineers certificate by the letter of the law this won't be acceptable for a NSW blue slip.

The RTA has a list of approved NSW engineers on their website and you would have to use one of them.

This is the 'official' version though. It's well worth speaking with friendly mechanics in your area to find out who has good contacts and might be able to help you through the process.

Leighton,

I would agree with Paul here.

As that syncro in QLD you are looking at is camper converted you will need an engineers certificate unless it comes with a certificate?

You will also need a blue slip.

I would suggest you go to a blue slip place and ask them if they can recommend any engineers close by.

Cheers,

Skott

Hello,

Sorry I got the location mixed up.

Just seeing if anyone knows of a excellent/trusted VW syncro workshop or a syncro memeber on the Sun Shine Coast?  to help me out with an inspection.

Leighton,

I would only get an engineers report done in NSW - I would only attempt to use a QLD one if a report is already in the current Owners possession. Otherwise you will have to do it again.

From when I did my roof conversion a few years ago, the cost of an engineer was around $600.00 including the report which you take to the Blue Slip mechanic and the RTA.

The good thing is if you get it classified as Motorhome you get cheaper rego and insurance - so try for that.

Cheers,

Skot

Ken,

It is a "Safari" brand which was either done in South Australia or Victoria originally.

It should have paperwork or some form of compliance sticker on it - but as they are old vehicles - who knows?

Leighton,
Sounds like you're entering a bureaucratic minefield if you buy this camper, similar to the tales of woe of previously reported buyers on here buying interstate vehicles. A whole lot easier to wait for a NSW syncro to bob up in due course and snap it up instead, then its very straightforward to transfer rego.

By the letter of the law if you want to register in NSW from interstate and the vehicle has aftermarket modifications (like a pop top roof) you need to see an engineer before getting a blue slip. If there are no aftermarket mods you can go straight for the blue slip.

I had my van booked in for some work with Steve Muller in Annandale, and he was able to help me with his contacts to make the process much easier. I realise he's not close to you, but if you can find someone local to you with similar contacts then this would be the way to go.

Good luck with it all,

Paul.

Thanks Skot,

Just wish I did not have to travel for work this week.

I wanted to ask you about Rego of your syncro? Is there any difference in the price and what code do you have on the rego/green slip?

Also do you know about Qld rego to NSW or how to check out interstate Syncro's?

Hi,
The Booster I have is a ATE 3433-1157 984, it is 260 mm in diameter and 15 mm deeper that the standards one.  I did not have a lot of time to mess around trying to install it but it just seem to big at the time.  If the part number look right, there must be a knack to getting them to fit.  If someone and confirm the one I have should fit I will give it another go.

Cheers,

Michael R

Michael/Yurik, There are about 10 different part numbers of E30 boosters that will fit. They all have the same outside dimensions. I have fitted one from an early 318i and the one I have in mine is from a 325ci '92. When I worked for BMW I tried to work out the differences between them all but there was no information on etk. There were two manufactures, one was ate and I can't remember the other maybe lucas. It seemed that each manufacturer made one of each and they were all interchangeable. It would be fair to assume that if there is a difference it would be best to get one from a six cylinder, ie 323i, 325i, 328i. They made the coupe and convertible into '93 a couple of years after the sedan stopped. These would be the best to get boosters from in my reckoning. I will try and dig out the part numbers I have used later. Greg E

Hi Michael
The part number for the BMW booster is 34331157416 and it can be found  on E30 models.  It’s a tight fit but works very well.

Hi,
Just need to find out the model numbers of the BMW booster that fit a syncro.  I pick one up about year ago but could not make it fit.  Must have got the wrong one.  So what ones do I need to look for.  Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

It will fit. You might have to oval out some mounting bolt holes. You will have to put a slight bend in one of the support brackets. It is tight from every angle but it works. A word of advise, whilst your there remove the pedal box and rebuild it. Greg E

Leighton,
Sounds like you're entering a bureaucratic minefield if you buy this camper, similar to the tales of woe of previously reported buyers on here buying interstate vehicles. A whole lot easier to wait for a NSW syncro to bob up in due course and snap it up instead, then its very straightforward to transfer rego.

Hello Ken,

It is a safari camper conversion from SA now in Qld. Do you know what checks I should do to make sure it is going to pass NSW and also interested in does anyone know what checks I should do to make sure the owner ownes the Syncro and if it has been in any crashes/right off?

Thanks,

Hello Skot,

Thanks for the input. Should I get the owner to get an engineers report in QLD if possible? Do you know of a transport company to help transport the syncro if I go ahead?

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the advice.  Last time I pulled it all apart and swapped out the pedal box for a low km 2wd  one I had.  I all so drilled a couple of holes in the dash behind the gauge cluster to make getting to the support brackets bolts easier and make the job simple next time round. Then just plugged them with grommets so you can see the holes. will give it another shot when back home in the workshop in a few weeks.

Cheers,

Michael R
