Bostig installation.

Just looking at that, that is a big difference for the US on the final drive. Did they have different engines or transmission ratio's to compensate?

Hi Peter and all,
It's really not complicated.
Select a ratio so that both transaxle and front diff match.
1. Change transaxle diff to match the front diff ie. 5.43 or
2. Change the front diff to match the transaxle diff ie. 4.86
I'd be choosing the latter.

All Australian Syncros have the 6P or 6PA transaxle with 38:7 R&P, 5.42857
Most North American Syncros have the AAK or AAN transaxle with 34:7 R&P, 4.587

Reasonibly sure i have the 4.86 gears in mine,
It's not as big a step as you might think.

110km/h is still 4000rpm, what are you fellows getting on the highway?

US had smaller wheels, hence the taller diff.
What size wheels did they have?

All things being equal the diff and tyre size used on U.S. models makes them 5kmh faster at 100kmh i.e. a higher overall ratio.  Cutting final drive teeth is not as easy a proposition as it seems. The number of teeth on the pinion and the crown will greatly effect its longevity and wether it is a hunting or non hunting. My guess is when VWNA requested a higher final drive ratio they needed to change both tyre and final drive to achieve the small increase they wanted. I have seen many manufacturers over the years have special final drive ratios and spring specs for north America. The springs are always softer and the final drives always higher. Greg
