Brake booster

Hi chaps,

It's not a Syncro question but I have a 1985 Dual Cab T3 which had a 3lt Ford Capri motor in it. That has been taken out and a 2.1lt VW motor has been installed.

The only issue at the moment is that when the brake peddle is depressed the engine revs race up.

Tested of the brake booster by pumping the brake hard then turning on the engine delivers no sinking of the brake peddle. This indicates that the booster is faulty.

My question is would that make the engine race when you put your foot on the brake?

The non return value has been replaced with a known working one to eliminated at it from the equation.

DC's haunted!? HA!

Can't imagine any correlation really other than the accelerator cable has been badly routed such that somewhere its fouling the brake line/linkages underneath.

So to that scenario, when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine revs, can the accelerator cable be observed to be moving at the throttle body position in the engine bay?

Obviously there was a bit of electrical fiddling to return the wbx ECU and injection so maybe an electrical gremlin are the brake lights behaving ? Air leak causing it to lean out ?

Not sure what the throttle switch does but is it connected to your brake light
switch?

Are the rev's going up when at idle? A vacuum leak will affect the idle speed, so if there is a leak in the booster, pushing the brakes can introduce a vacuum leak to the engine and affecting idle speed.

That said, the boosters are not common to fail, and I would have thought it was noticeable on the old engine also.

Simple test, isolate the vacuum line to the booster as close to the booster as possible, see how it all runs and confirm if pushing the brakes affects rev's. If it doesn't, I would re-do the test with the vacuum line to the booster isolated back at the engine just to confirm there are no leaks in the line. (more likely than in the booster itself) Hope it's not the booster as that's a big job to get it out.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Have do all the things suggested so far looks like the booster.

Do anybody have a spare booster lying about they would like to part with.

That's great service Hart :)

Peter, when you have it out, it's worth checking for wear on the clutch pedal pin, they are known to wear quite badly, and worth repairing while your in there.
