I spent 6 months trying to track one down from the uk as this ratio is incredibly rare being that they were found only in the 16" diesel syncro's. I'll be bashing myself if I find out there's somebody still manufacturing this ratio. I know only of albins having made the 5.43 ring and pinion and heard they would only make more if (x) amount of units were purchased?

Hi Erik
I have a 16” syncro with 6.17 R&P that came as stock with petrol MV engine. I too have been trying to source worldwide for a new one for the past 12 month and have just now been successful in obtaining one from GoWesty
www.gowesty.com It appears they had an exclusive batch manufactured with this ratio and also the 5.43 and 5.83 ratios. If you are thinking of going with the larger 16” tyres then the 6.17 ratio is the way to go – it gives the right gearing for the larger diameter wheels without modifying the 3rd & 4th gear ratios. ie the gearbox ratios remain stock. Incidentally they also have these three ratios available for the front diff ring and pinion. As you know both front and rear diffs have to have matching ratios.
Regards
Yurik

Thanks for that info I had no idea any new batches were still being manufactured in that ratio. This r&p ratio must be very sought after as I remember posting about installing a taller 4th gear on syncro.org and was overwhelmed by the amount of pm's I was setn asking if I wanted to trade my 6.17 for a taller ratio. It seems I don't have the luxury of fitting taller tires on my 14" syncro as you do. At best I can bring my gearing to within around 1% of of stock by running 235/75/15 which might be a little low with the extra power of a 2.5l subaru engine. A 0.70 4th might be the solution but at the moment it looks to be a costly exercise especially seeing as my gearbox saw a complete rebuild only 1000ks ago. I have been toying with the idea of buying extended swing arms to run larger tires of 30-31inch but the 1150us price tag from burley motorsports plus shipping and tax is keeping me from buying them.
I have a wrecked t3 and have been curious as to whether I could remove the swingarms and have a good fabrication shop reinforce and extend them an inch. Main convern is finding someone I trust to do the job right. regards,
erik

Hi Eddie. No the 2wd crown wheel and pinion won't fit a 4wd box regardless of ratios. The 4wd shaft that the pinion is part of is much longer. Lots of other bits in the 2wd box are compatable so your 2wd box is valuable for other bits. In an earlier post Neil recommended Ron Schmidt in Kempsey. I also cant recommend him highly enough. He rebuilt my box for a very reasonable price, better than the original. Ron spends a lot of time with Albins gears designing boxes which are sought after all over the world in racing circles. Bill.
