Broken throttle cable 175km north Charleville.

Hi all. About an hour ago we broke a throttle cable 175km north of Charleville. We were avertaking a 3 dog road train at the time. Marg and i are now on the side of the road waiting for the racq to come out from Charleville to pick us up. Due to the wunders of technology we have help on the way,a spare cable on the way to Charleville by air freight, hopefully there by monday or tuesday and are booked into the ccobb and co caravan park tonight. My question is how do you refit the cable it looks like a nightmare? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I can't believe i didn't have a spare. Help Bill and Marg.

Bill,

I have never had to do this on a Syncro but the common method is to use the broken cable to pull through the new one but this can depend on where it is broken.  With any luck, the RACQ man will be well versed in bush mechanics and might have useful advice.

If you have two people you sure can keep moving ..
on person can just reach over the back seat and operate the throttle.

or ...it's been traditional for the last 50 years to rig a rope or something so you can yank on the  throttle  t from the driver's seat.

and failing either of those ..you rig the throttle fixed at about half.
then you drive using the ignition key on/off ...
crude, but you could drive a thousand miles that way if you had too.

where have you guys been ?
This  is very common 'Baja California   keep-moving very old tech.

to replace the throttle cable..
the two key spots are remove the cover underneath in front, under the gas pedal.
drop the spare tire to help access that.
4 Phillips screws there,
then one barrel cable clamp, 8mm wrench. ( or 5/16ths inch )

then right under the middle of the van ..
10 mm nut and bolt there holds  part of the throttle cable.
undo that, withdraw the cable from the front pulling out to the middle of the van there.

undo it at the back.

for fishing ANY cable or radio antenna through tight areas ..
never just pull the old one out.
attach the new one to the old one, and pull the new one into place that way, if you need to.

lube things going back together nicely..
under the gas pedal, that bell crank ..
especially lube inside the white plastic tube putting the new cable in.
lube the new cable.

lube everything that moves..lol.

Scott. Thanks for the tips. Sounds like a hoist would be helpfull. We've been out the back of Longreach in Black soil country in the rain so the underneath of the van needs to be seen to believe. A good gernie before work is started. Thanks hope to be back for Valla. Bill.

Bill,  when it happened to me, I had to replace the hard plastic sleeve first, because the old one was broken in several places. If yours still ok it’s just a matter of pulling the broken one out and pushing the new one in. You might find that there is a slight modification ness at the rear end, can’t remember though but you will work that one out. I  think there is a little ball crimped to the end which has to be cut of or something similar.........  Hope you make it to Valla  / of course you will.!!    H.

Update on the broken throttle cable. We finally arrived into Charleville last night at 9.15 on a tilt tray. This morning i went to the local Honda bike shop and bought 5metres of inner cable and a can of wd40. After removing the old cable with plenty of lube the new cable slid in beautifully. I had to modify the clamps at each end with tie wire but it works. The correct cable will be here tuesday i hope but i don't think i'll fit it till we get home. Access to the front mount was via removing the front blinker and underneath. I couldn't see a plate to remove Scott. Anyway 5m of cable would be a worthwile addition to any spares about 10 bucks. See you at at Valla. Bill.
Hi All,
This thread just reminded my of the day we snap our cable in our old 2wd T3.  I sat in the back of the van with the engine cover off and operated the throttle by hand for 300 km.  The only trick was getting the throttle and gear changes synchronized.  This is not the recommended method of limping home.  My thumb was very saw by the time we eventually made it home.

Cheers,

I have noticed driving both my old man's T3 syncro and mine that the accelerator cable with a VW engine is much stiffer than my Scooby powered T3 syncro. Probably putting a lot more strain on the cable.

There was a significant difference between the two to the point my ankle became sore after an hours driving my dad's syncro. Mine you don't even notice it.

I know I am a wouse but there may be a tension issue there?

Cheers,

Skot

Much more likely to be inadequate lubrication along the very long cable run.

the white plastic tube in the forward half of the T3 body, that throttle cable slides in commonly needs to be blown out with compressed air, then cable inserted back in adding a high quality synthetic spray lube as the cable is back fed in from the rear of that plastic tube.
also ..the bell crank under the front floor ...under the gas pedal..that needs to be lubed. I haven't seen one of a right hand drive Syncro, so yours may be different than what  I see here in the US.

the rear part of the throttle cable...where it slides in its own black outer cable..
that needs lubing.
the throttle body shaft needs lubing.
the return spring pressure on the throttle bodies is pretty high  - it's those 'wound' springs on it. I have a time or two undone one end of that spring and re-arranged it so there is a bit less throttle return spring pressure.

when it's all cleaned and lubed again, the difference can be astounding.

good idea to check that it gets full throttle back there with gas pedal  floored too. Engine off of course.
