Hi Mark, Rodger and all,
I used 20mm marine ply, my three slabs were cut at 1170x600mm giving me a 1.8m bunk bed. I think the 20mm ply is probably overkill and that you could potentially go lighter and thinner but I wanted to be doubly sure of the load capacity with two kids jumping around up there. As I said I've also just covered my slabs with Marine carpet ($60 from the hardware supermarket where all the staff are busy doing adverts and not serving people).

There are I think advantages in not attaching the pieces to one another via a concertina system of some sort. 1. They are easily removed when separate; 2. In the Trakka at least there are obstacles like roof clips to manoeuvre past when you set the bed up, the separate pieces make it easier to get past these obstacles; 3. If you are having condensation problems you can leave 2 small breathing spaces between the three slabs. I simply could not have a concertina style bed as I had in my old T2 due to the nature of the roof construction. Before building mine I contacted Trakka and asked how they had done it and my understanding is that their design was much like to one I have built.
Photos to follow.

And just a note to Ken. The problem with the Barry Manilow for crocs is that it will also scare off Brian's Syncro colleagues as well - is this not the sort of thing they play at train stations to scare off loitering youth?  I'm sure Brian wants some social interaction? :-)

Cheers
Murray

Gday Bruce,

hhhmmmmmm   ......... makes my T2 kombi 23 inch tyres look a tad paltry.

Prudence would be to leave said wimp safely parked in my garage then eh.

Hi Murray

Thanks for the images - can you please post a photo or two of the actual channel rail in which they site. In the Camperize conversion these rails (or ledge) seems quite narrow and small - maybe only 1cm wide. How wide are yours? Also, ours seem to have a slight angle to them, ie, not entirely flat.

Regards
Mark.

RE: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Bunk Bed

Hi Mark,

I've added two photos that show the edge. It is about 2cm on mine. I'd suggest going for heavy ply like I did to minimise the flex in your case with such a slim margin. Also, you need to ensue you get you measurements right with wise - I got the timber  supplier to cut mine to my specifications. Further, having just added the carpet one big advantage is that the system slides better and does less damage to both the car, and the head when you inevitably bump it!

Cheers Murray

Gday Murray,

Nice pics. Especially the one showing the boards laid out. Well done
project. This is beta version 001 right?

Now with a tad more R&D, methinks beta version 002 would be
multi-function, for those long wet days on the road trying to keep the
kids entertained, the worlds first mobile pool table! How good is that?

Cheers.

Ken

RE: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Re: Bunk Bed

I like it Ken, a few holes in the corners and we're away. Otherwise, you could mesh off the end for use as a Croc enclosure. Its only fitting  that Roger bring a prize back from the Cape. The bed as it stands has been functional for quite some time, its just the carpeting that was the final point of the project.

Cheers M

Gday Murray,

Nice pics. Especially the one showing the boards laid out. Well done
project. This is beta version 001 right?

Now with a tad more R&D, methinks beta version 002 would be
multi-function, for those long wet days on the road trying to keep the
kids entertained, the worlds first mobile pool table! How good is that?

Cheers.

Dear Murray,
Thanks for all those useful photos. I can't believe that I didn't think of the boards having to fit round the roof tie down clips. I shouldn't be doing things from memory as when I popped up my roof the full width cupboard already gives me the first panel and 2 or 3 more, one with cutouts for the clips should solve the problem. Something about the KISS principal comes to mind although also like the idea of  padding the end to protect what memory cells are left in my brain. Will also have to check my lease to see if my camper allows sub-letting to casual tenants.
I actually expect Brian's T5 to be perfectly adequate to get him to the top but the whole purpose in going as a group is to allow some contingency planning plus I feel there could be a bit of Kombi bonding as the 4XXXX comes out and the sun goes down over the tropical sky. The original Burke & Wills departure obelisk is quite close to where I live in Melbourne but even if I forgo bringing a crocodile back I still expect our bit of a drive will be more successful and we probably won't have to eat the camels.
Thanks everyone for your contributions I've learned much along the way and but am still wondering whether to go for the green baize with pockets in each corner. Do you remember when the group first got started it seemed we went for weeks with hardly any interaction.
Cheers

Hi Roger

When is departure date? I hope it leaves enough time for you to have your Bank's Area Manager confer with the State Manager about your credit worthiness to purchase enough fuel for the round trip (4,516km Melbourne to Bamaga!) Could be around 680 litres one way at 15l/100km. Make sure you can buy enough fuel to get back and not meet a fate like Burke and Wills!

Regards
Mark.

Cheers

Gday Murray,

Nice pics. Especially the one showing the boards laid out. Well done
project. This is beta version 001 right?

Now with a tad more R&D, methinks beta version 002 would be
multi-function, for those long wet days on the road trying to keep the
kids entertained, the worlds first mobile pool table! How good is that?

Cheers.

Ken

you could potentially go lighter and thinner but I wanted to be doubly
sure of the load capacity with two kids jumping around up there. As I
said I've also just covered my slabs with Marine carpet ($60 from the
hardware supermarket where all the staff are busy doing adverts and not
serving people).

when separate; 2. In the Trakka at least there are obstacles like roof
clips to manoeuvre past when you set the bed up, the separate pieces
make it easier to get past these obstacles; 3. If you are having
condensation problems you can leave 2 small breathing spaces between the
three slabs. I simply could not have a concertina style bed as I had in
my old T2 due to the nature of the roof construction. Before building
mine I contacted Trakka and asked how they had done it and my
understanding is that their design was much like to one I have built.

Gday Roger,

re: "> VW Type 25 3rd generation Transporter Syncro Camper (or T3 to my
friends)"

yes I totally agree, most of us remain forever bemused at VW's success
at making a near total hash of its vehicle designations. Anyway, who
cares? Most of the owners have made a sensible workaround eh.

T1 ... splitty

T2 ... bay

T3 ... wedge

T4 ... yuk1

T5 ... yuk2 (sorry Brian, please forgive me ... haha)

Cheers.

Ken
