+++ Burp Tank needed +++

Hi there, me again!

Thanks Yuri, my Syncro is starting a gain. All perfect. Many thanks.

Now I realized, that my "new" OEM Burptank (Big in and big outlet 2.1 WBX) is getting white spots and cracks all over the thing. One little drop is coming out when pressure is on the system. It's not even 1/2 year old. Does anybody has a genuine Volkswagen Tank in good condition lying around for sale?

Cheers

Seb
P.S.

I have a EJ22 in there and it was running a little hot 120 degrees from Darwin down to Alice Springs.

I am thinking about an Oilcooler, but maybe i run a wrong oil for here.

I run Valvoline 10W40 semi synth.

What would you guys do? 10W50 ??? 5W30 as Subaru recommends??

Thanks in advance

Seb

Sebastian,

There are very few ‘replacement’ parts that are worth using; as many have found, they can be of very inferior quality.   Outside of Germany, one of the few reliable (as in quality) sources is:

Volks Home

16 Commercial Drive, Thomastown

John Goodison; 03) 9464 0366

John is very particular about the quality of parts and simply will not stock anything that he knows to be of inferior quality.  He is the best source of OEM parts that I have found in Australia .

Sebastian,

We have very little expertise in Subaru conversions.  You will be far better off by asking the US Subaru-Vanagon group.  They have members in the southern states who would experience the same temperatures as the NT.

Hi fellow syncro nutters,

Found this syncro shell for sale which appears to have a motor but no
gearbox or VC in it - the rest of the drive-train is apparently in good
order.

Missing camper interior but has pop-top if anyone wants one:

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/osborne-park/cars-vans-utes/syncro-unlicened-volkswagen-transporter-kombi-camper/1033798880

Note - not mine - just saw it and thought someone might use the bits or
resurrect it?

Cheers,

Skot
Hey Les

Thank you! I will contact them and see what they have. How is Andreas Syncro going? Was it the Head Gaskets? She didn't contacted me since.

Cheers

Seb

Sebastian,

Your “burp tank” terminology has me bluffed.  Is it the reservoir or the overflow tank?  If you are running the MV cooling setup, you have two tanks – as above.  If you are running Subaru, you probably have just one.  In any event, if anything starts burping, you are in deep poo!!

I am still going through Andrea’s Syncro and being careful about but, so far, it would appear that the problem probably started with inadequate cooling system bleeding.  There might have been a couple of other small contributing factors but, at the moment, it is functioning correctly.  It got her from Brisbane to Melbourne via the Newell.

Mercifully, the head gaskets and the heads are fine!!

That's good news. It's harder then on a normal cooling setup to bleed her system, but i had it right after about 6 times ;-) I thought it must be that before the headgasket. I had the same with mine, thinking the gasket is gone, but i just had to bleed it again and again.

I have the MV setup, it's the main reservoir with the sensor, not the one behind the flap. I will try volkshome for a spare tank.

Thanks for helping out Andrea. She learned and adapted a lot and she loves Oscar. It's a reliable car, we have done a lot to it since she bought it.

Hope i'll see some of the syncro guys here in Alice one day. As i said. I own a hostel now there is only one Syncro in the carpark now ;-)

Take care

Cheers

Seb

Hi Sebastian,

How do you have the thermostat/heater plumbed in??? I have an EJ in my van and it never gets hot….if you run the heater plumbing from the thermostat supply it can delay the opening of the thermostat or not allow it to open fully. The first thing I would do is check the thermostat….buy a new Subaru one (genuine) and make sure it’s installed the correct way. I also had an EJ in my VW 74 Dual Cab ute and it had all sorts of problems…continually ran hotter than it should have…ended up being the thermostat not fully opening, replaced it and it ran great!!! I use 15w40 or 20w50 mineral oil, usually the latter as a semi synthetic and I flog my cars….

Michael, Townsville..

Hi Michael

I do have the Thermostat and also the adapter between Engine and Thermostat. I bought a new genuine Thermostat. I think if i wouldn't see the oiltemp, everything would be good ;-) Watertemp always stays the same on the dashboard. Maybe the gauges are unreliable. The sensor is on a sandwich adapter at the oilcooler.

Townsville is hot, so no problems with cheap mineral oil?

Cheers
