Can anyone help inspect Syncro in Melbourne or Perth?

Just seeing if anyone can help inspect two syncro's I am looking at in Melbourne or Perth? I am in NSW and only have seen photo's on net and spoken with owners/sellers. Does anyone have any history on the two syncro's? Carsales blue camper in VIC and white Gumtree Camper in WA? just wanting to see if the story they have told me is correct?

Hi Leighton,

I had a quick look at the Perth van. No diff lock which pretty much rules it out for any serious off road work. Otherwise a reasonable looking van..

Hello Mark,

Thanks for getting back to me. Did you just look online or have you seen it in person? Did you see if it is rust free and all panels are straight? Is the inside clean? Did you see any of the paper work on engine reco?

Thanks,

Leighton

Leighton, If you are seriously looking at the 25k blue one in Thomastown I can go this Sat morning (between 9 and 12am). If you organise it and just tell me the time and address. Cheers Greg E

Hello Greg,
Yes I am seriously looking at the $25k one, but it is in Boronia, at Volkscare - so I have been told. Do you live near there? He informed me that he only wants somone who knows syncros and can drive one to come and look??? I will try and arrange a time and thanks so much for your kind offer.
Does anyone know if you can put aircon into a syncro that does not have it?

Speak soon,
Leighton

Leighton. If you look back through posts there's lots of coverage of aircon subjects. The answer to your question is yes. If you don't have aircon skills(like Hart) then throwing lots of money at it will solve your problem. Bill

Heh Bill ! Once upon a time I was pretty good at it nowadays I stay away from installing such things, I can charge them (even without sight glass) correctly, but that’s how far it goes...

Yesterday I replaced the muffler in the Trakka, a days work for me, as you hunt for nuts and bolts in this village of ours . I ended up getting some at Bale Defence Contractors ($30.--) than I found a

Boat service man who could sandblast the metal straps and gadgets which hold the muffler in place ($20.--) than off to the paint place to get heat proof black matte spraypaint ($14.--)

And is there anybody out there who cannot/will not see that we are in massive market recorrection /inflation?  Over all this chasing around I was  too late to get my compound saw from ALDI

($ 149.95)  ,all that was left were 2 empty pallets , the saws had walked out by 10.30.    Hartmut   ps Bill when can I come for a visit?? Have to take the Tristar for a run.

Hart. I REPLACED MY MUFFLER A MONTH OR SO AGO AND ORDERED A KIT OF MUFFLER BOLTS AND GASKETS FROM JUST KAMPERS FOR ABOUT 30 BUCKS. HEAPS LEFT OVER FOR SPARES AS WELL. I've got family (16) arriving today and tonight for an early christmas. Both syncros doing duty as accommodation in the yard. They will be gone tuesday and would be great to receive a visit anytime. Ten minutes notice and i'll have beer cold and a few sangers ready. Also we can talk about a northcoasters get together when the city folk arrive at crescent over christmas. Bill.

Hi Leighton,

no I just had a look online. If you're serious about offroad don't go for a van without a diff lock. Many times I would have been stuck without it. Fitting one requires removing engine/transaxle I believe.

Also I'm not a fan of rebuilt motors. Generally speaking once they've had corrosion issues they'll always have corrosion issues.

Also not a fan of people not deleting previous posts when they reply.

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the info and advice. If I've understood your hint correctly, you'd prefer if I delete the message I'm responding to? Sorry I haven't been doing that.

Leighton,

The phrase “serious off-road” comes up from time to time and usually needs some qualification, particularly when new members are involved.

The primary question is ‘what do/did you buy a Syncro for?’

The subsidiary question is ‘how serious is serious?’

Most people buy a Syncro for the same reasons that VAG designed it – to have a commodious multipurpose vehicle capable of very sure grip, sure braking and sure handling on a variety of surfaces, made and unmade, wet and dry, snow and ice, firm and loose.

Some people are very happy to a camper Syncro grossing near three tone, loaded with wife and children and gear for two weeks on the trot, travel along fire trails and coastal tracks in comfort and safety.

Some people buy a Syncro believing (or hoping) that it is a Pinzgauer, in which they wish to storm up 100% gradients just for the sake of storming up 100% gradients, preferably on a moraine.  In mid-winter.

Remarkably, a well driven non-lock Syncro will comfortably negotiate quite improbable terrain just using the formidable grip that came as standard – and note the “well driven” part of it.

So it is up to you to decide just how serious is serious.

Les

Leighton,

It assists the readability if the non-relevant parts of previous posts are cut off.
