Commodore Coolant Tabs

Ive been recommended by my mechanic to add 3 tablets to the coolant system. They are brown, round tabs were designed for Holden Commodores and cost me $14. He suggested to crush and stir in distilled water before adding then take it for a good drive. He says it may turn the coolant colour slightly brown but he has seen that they protect all the coolant inner seals, etc like in the water pump. Does anyone have any experience using such tabs?
Thanks Dave

Dave,

Since we haven’t had any reports of unexpected seal or hose failure when the correct coolant is used in the MV engine, I would suggest that there is no advantage in using something designed for an entirely different engine.

Les

Here in America, that solution is called "snake oil". In the olden days of simple, but robust, iron block engines and brass radiators people could use such concoctions to block minor leaks. In a pinch, a spoonful of oatmeal would even do the trick.

In these days of highly corrosive (relatively speaking) aluminium radiators with fine galleys and alloy engines of similar character, I would be very nervous about putting anything in my engine which has not been proven beneficial specific to it.

I no longer own any Wasserboxer equipped Syncros having switch to turbodiesel power. But I owned a couple of dozen Wasserboxers before. I had 386K miles on my original headgasket in my 2.1 and 275K+ in another w/o incident. The least common denominator was the use of VW blue coolant & biennial replacement during tenure.

At any rate, I don't feel there is such a thing as a miracle cure. Anytime some tries to sell me something that can supposedly fix/repair/prevent problems with a simple 'pill', I run the other way as fast as I can.

Hi Ben,

Good advice. Ill hold off on the tabs and trust the G11/distilled H2O will do the trick

Cheers Dave

Dear Les,

Got your letter today with its enclosure.Thanks. One way or another you had quite a day of it that Sunday so was more than pleased to facilitate you not having to drive home thinking all the way What if What if What if. The lack of a name tag was easily fixed and was probably my fault as I did tell you I had stuff from the previous year.
All in all a good day with good outcomes so thank you for your major role in making it all happen. Was also pleased that your suggestion to lend Phil a vehicle gave me the chance to enjoy more of his company on the Saturday.
Cheers
Roger
