Complete Silicone Coolant Hose KIt

As an owner of a 1989 T3 (Vanagon GL) Westfalia Syncro in Miami FL with a 2.1 liter gas engine. I would like to ask the group if interest exist in replacing all coolant hoses with silicone hoses?

I am willing to do the foot work if 20 to 25 members express interest in a group buy.

Please advise.

Best regards,

Hector
Hector

I would be very interested depending on the price, There was a post a while ago by Roger (Beetle) Bayley who puchased most of the hoses from Tooleys and the rest from the states.

Hector,
I'm unaware of a complete coolant hoses kit in silicone. Can you please advise your source?

I see Van Cafe are now selling a complete coolant hoses kit that now includes the previous five NLA hoses which are again available in silicone plus special clips for them.
Cheers.

Ken, Hector,

I am not up to speed on this.   What are the advantages of silicone hoses over conventional material?

Supposedly they are stronger lighter and don't degrade as quickly as rubber or neoprene. You do have to use a good quality broad band type clamp due to the smaller wall thickness. Greg E

To all members,

I am not aware of a the complete kit for a 2.1 liter gas engine and probably one will not exist until a group buy or a deep pocket VW lover makes the investment.

Obviously, I want to install in my engine silicone hoses… The idea behind it all… Is to get the price of making the tooling off our price. Therefore, we all improve our rubber hoses at reasonable prices. Silicone hoses are many times better than our regular rubber hoses. Reason why they are used in aircraft... The stainless steel aircraft clamps will be included on all the hoses.

Pricing at this point is imposible, tooling costs kills any reasonable pricing. We need to be a group buy in order to make the pricing reasonable for all.

The source is MADE-IN-USA and NOT IN CHINA!

Once we have a group of names together, I will then quote on 5 and 4 ply silicone hoses with stainless steel clamps and each owner will then decide.

Please respond if you want your name on the list.

If you prefer to call: 818.206.2424 from 9 to 9 eastern standard time.

Regards,

Hector

Hector,

Sure I'm interested but of course, it depends on the final price. Ballpark figure? Are you suggesting Van Cafe hose kits are sourced from PRC?

Just to add to the debate, given the complete rubber/silicone combination kit can be had from Van Cafe for $US375 plus shipping, matching or bettering that benchmark price in silicone will sway interest one way or the other. Bare in mind, back in around 2006, a full set of hoses purchased individually would cost around $US700-800 plus shipping. Bought as a kit it was around $US500. Now its $US375 including some silicone hoses and their special clips. Getting better all the time.

I can't speak for US conditions, but in Australia, installing a complete set of hoses in late 2011 would last my remaining ownership of this vehicle, even in rubber, perhaps with one exception ... the S shaped 251 121 072 A hose. This is the most vulnerable and stressed and hence replaced hose.

Cheers.

The only other hose besides the one you cite that I've seen any weakness on is the 025.121.058H
hose..the one on the bottom of the pressure bottle going to the large pipe that is bolted to the water pump.

re 'in the US'.................. I find that mostly the hoses last just about indefinitely.
The ones that fail are the ones that run hottest and there's only a couple of those, that are failure-prone, on a Syncro in my experience.
