coolant question

Hello, I am replacing a couple of hoses and changing the coolant at the moment and have managed to remove about 6 - 7 litres so far.
I have removed the pipes at the bottom of the radiator, a pipe at the rear that goes underneath, 3 small pipes at the oil cooler, and one pipe at the water pump.

Can anyone help me with ideas how I might get more of the old coolant out. All suggestions welcomed. Regards Greg

Greg,

There are drain plugs under each water jacket, which is the lowest point in the cooling system.   You will need 17.5 litres to refill from empty.

Les

Thanks Les, Where is the water jacket? and is it shown and called that in the Bentleys manual? Greg

Sorry, should have been a bit more explicit.   The cylinder blocks are cast aluminium and contain the cylinders. The water jacket is what encases the cylinders.   The illustration on Page 15.26 shows the drain plugs.

I've removed those threaded plugs ( 6mm allen, between the push rod tubes, accessible after removing the spash guard tin piece under each head ) ....

and there was still coolant in the engine.

What I suggest is get all you can get out easily,
fill with water, run that around a while, then get all of that out that you can ..
then most of the old coolant will be removed.

Greg,

Page 13.32 shows the stone guards but does not name them.   Reading from the top right of the page, you see the front exhaust pipe, then the two guards, then the engine carrier.   Their principal role is to protect the push rod tubes from stone strike.

Hello, for compatability with G12+I am trying to work out the type of coolant I have in the cooling system at the moment.

Is G11 dark green and are there any other ways to work out what type of coolant it is. Greg

Greg,

I believe G11 is blue.
If your coolant is green, do you have service records that may assist in identifying the coolant concentrate installed?

There's a good chance then that as well, the water in it is straight out of the reticulated town water supply. Not good.

Generally speaking if the coolant is green, consider this may be the time to thoroughly check/flush out the whole cooling system (also look for excessive rust particles that may be laying about in coolant pipes and if necessary pipe-brush/jet hose etc clean them out if found) and finally install an approved G11 or G12 Plus coolant/distilled water mix up to 50:50 ratio.

Practice good housekeeping with this maintenance task ... if you're going to do it, do it thoroughly, sure it's a pain in the butt, but it's worth the effort in the long run.

Cheers.

Ken

Yes, green is bad. The last VW coolant that was green was G10 that was not suitable for WBX engines.
