Best regards, Scott Pitcher SPB Consulting

It appears to be well informed.

It's a pity he doesn't make more reference to VWs.

I am running my own experiment since I was initially advised to use a GL-5 gear oil in my off road 091 transaxle.

This gearbox works hard in my van running large tyres and a torquey engine and driven daily.

I feel comfortable knowing the diff has the extra EP protection.

The oil has been in there now for 10 years and I have not noticed any reduction in synchronizer performance.

I would say that if the synchronizers can withstand the GL-5 for 10 years I am pretty happy with that; synchros are fairly cheap compared to ring and pinion gears and you can still drive home with worn out synchros.  If I have to rebuild the gearbox every 10 years that is probably acceptable.

I do believe the ring and pinion gears are the weakest point in these transaxles and need all the help they can get especially if extra tooth loads are present such as larger tyres, heavy van, torquey/ non stock engine, towing etc.

I am currently having my spare gearbox rebuilt so will take out the existing one even though it is still running without fault and check how the synchros look after 10 years with GL-5 oil.

My sister's gearbox has just been rebuilt after having run GL-5 oil also for around 10 years driven daily.

It was rebuilt only because the engine was rebuilt and it was a good time to check the gearbox not because there were any problems with the gearbox.

I didn't think to ask about the condition of the synchros and whether they were reused or not but new synchros definitely weren't on the invoice.

Neil.

Thanks Neil.

Interesting observations.

Its the packaging that is a concern with a lot of gearbox oils - you never really know what you are getting.

I just went with what Rudi recommended as he rebuilt my gearbox and has loads of experience with these animals.

So far - so good :)

Cheers,

Scott

Neil.

I think I’m in need of a gearbox rebuild. Can it be easily removed with the engine in situ?
Thanks

Hi Gaetan,

Nothing is easy but its definitely possible.

I have done it with the engine in and out and both have their issues but if you want to keep all that 17L of coolant in place and not have all the wiring hassles, leave the engine in and remove the gearbox.

Best of luck,

Scott

Thanks Scott. I assume that frame running under the gearbox has to come off..
I’m going to work on the gearshift rods and linkages first, to ensure my problems are not due to those things. It’s all looking rather worn and loose.
Main problem is popping out of 4th gear while driving.

Cheers

Hi Gaetan,

Nothing is easy but its definitely possible.

I have done it with the engine in and out and both have their issues but if you want to keep all that 17L of coolant in place and not have all the wiring hassles, leave the engine in and remove the gearbox.

Best of luck,

Scott

I just went with what Rudi recommended as he rebuilt my gearbox and has loads of experience with these animals.

Neil.

Hey.

Popping put of 4th is never due to the gear linkage adjustments ( ask me how I know:).

Hi Beau,

How do you know?

Would love clarification so I know what I’m chasing and prep for how bad a hit on my wallet this is going to be..

Cheers

Hey.

Popping put of 4th is never due to the gear linkage adjustments ( ask me how I know:).

Cheers

Thanks Scott. I assume that frame running under the gearbox has to come off..

I’m going to work on the gearshift rods and linkages first, to ensure my problems are not due to those things. It’s all looking rather worn and loose.

Main problem is popping out of 4th gear while driving.

Hi Gaetan,

Nothing is easy but its definitely possible.

I have done it with the engine in and out and both have their issues but if you want to keep all that 17L of coolant in place and not have all the wiring hassles, leave the engine in and remove the gearbox.

Best of luck,

Scott

I think I’m in need of a gearbox rebuild. Can it be easily removed with the engine in situ?

Thanks Neil.

Interesting observations.

Its the packaging that is a concern with a lot of gearbox oils - you never really know what you are getting.

I just went with what Rudi recommended as he rebuilt my gearbox and has loads of experience with these animals.

So far - so good :)

Neil.

Hey all.

4th is jumping out, as the fork and/or slider are worn:
Inline image
This must always be replaced while taking the box apart due to it being impossible to measure or confirm if part still OK. It is also a common issue after a full rebuild - jumping out of 4th, as the rebuilder didn't replace those (as the old ones looked like new).
What you can do to confirm is to check through the filler plug hole, while the 4th is disengaged and engaged. While engaged, it needs to cover teeth on the ring completely. If it is just slightly out, it will pop out.
It is a bit awkward to see - but with an extra torch and a mirror or an extra torch and phone as a camera, you can see it through the hole. It should look like:
Inline image
Disengaged - teeth on the ring fully exposed.
Inline image
Engaged - teeth fully covered.

In my case, it was only about 0.8 mm gap (teeth showing) and it was popping out. The problem is, that these tolerances are not adjustable (like in older T2 buses and beetles etc.), so parts just need to be perfect.

Regarding my statement about linkage won't fix it - the linkage travels much further if you take the cup of - so the movement of the linkage/stick is actually limited by the gearbox fork movement - so when you press in fully (any gear), the gearstick stays at the point, where the engaged gear stops it...

Good luck
Beau

Hey.

Popping put of 4th is never due to the gear linkage adjustments ( ask me how I know:).

Scott

Interesting observations.

Its the packaging that is a concern with a lot of gearbox oils - you never really know what you are getting.

I just went with what Rudi recommended as he rebuilt my gearbox and has loads of experience with these animals.

So far - so good :)

Neil.

Good luck

Beau

Interesting read on all of these posts.
My mechanic did the first oil change on my Syncro when I got it. I don't know the brand, but spec would be as recommended by VW. I have since replace with Swepco 210 (which is GL-5).
Have done roughly 30k km on the original oil and about 20k km on the Swepco.

My main concern was the amount of fine metal on the drain plug when I drained the oil. The amount was the same on a recent oil change with the Swepco. So something is on the way out, but GL4 or GL5 don't seem to have made a difference as far as metal on the drain plug is concerned.

Not sure of the affect on the Syncro's, gear changes have not really changed noticeably in that time, but as Neil say's, it's nice to prolong the life of the gears/diff.

Unfortunately other than being told by the previous owner the box was rebuilt, I do not know exactly how long before I bought it.
