What 78,000+ u say i find it hard to believe when a new Touareg can be

But yes i believe in reference to the syncro camper, they were
fetching around high 60's new...

“I kow for certain in the yr86 a new westfalia could be had for 18,600

I find that a bit hard to believe (if you mean Australian dollars, in Australia). Not aware Westy’s were ever sold here, but I bought a brand new 2wd window van (otherwise bare in the back) in 1986 and paid $17,500 (with about a $500 discount).  I could have had a Holden Shuttle (remember them) from the same dealer for $2000 less;- it would be well dead by now.

I remember when I first became aware of syncro’s they cost nearly $20,000 more than the equivalent 2wd van, compared to about $4000 extra now for  4Motion on a T5.  It’s understandable though, given the syncro was hand built by SDP. $60k plus was about right for a Trakka syncro I think (? Les ??), but if I remember, ‘Gold Pak’ Trakkas were built on a Caravelle syncro base so that’s around $60k before you even start on the camper conversion.

And a Touareg is alright, but it’s not a camper.  The California (if it is ever released here), or a Trakkadu, with 4 Motion and ‘off road pack’ and good options will be north of $110k.

No they used a Transporter.
Phill,

Unless I am missing something, my Trakka conversion, which I believe is the Gold Pak, was built on an 89 Transporter.  The original owner bought the new vehicle with the conversion on it.  It has the shower and originally had the rear and side awnings.  As far as I can see from the original Gold Pak brochure, everything is the same.  The side windows are after market, not original Caravelle.

Mine might originally have had the solar panels.  There is extra wiring in the pop top that would be compatible with solar panels on the roof.  My pop top has popped a rivet at the front and I will have to lift the whole top off in the not too distant future to re-seal and secure the top.

Hi Les,

That is interesting about the rivet, I think I may have popped one too. No leaks or anything but I'm sure the front driver's side where the popup meets the metal is not completely locked in. Let me know what happens when you re-do the roof. Do you think a rivet can be replaced without such a big makeover?

Murray,

Mine popped whilst I was on the Princes Freeway, doing 100-105.  There is one big rivet on each side at the front.  The front edge is bonded to the roof skin with a silicone adhesive, and that has split open.  (I am not sure which failed first.)  The resultant wind noise was most impressive!!  As a temporary measure, I have sealed and secured it with rally tape.  It is now safe - won't rip off, that is - until I can get to it.

Les,

That sounds pretty dramatic. No such noise with mine, just a bit of wind noise and the sense that it might not be completely sealed - you can push it down a little from the outside. It might be worth my while to get it resealed before something like that happens happens to me.

here are Brian they are refering to the UK.
"In the UK syncro models were £3500 - £3800 more expensive than the
standard transporters which at a price of £13,000 - £15300 when
introduced in 1986 made many people look elsewhere for cheaper vehicles."

I have quite a collection of Transporter brochures over the years as I flirted with the possiblity before the dream became a reality. The previous (original) owner of my van  did a lot of research before settling on the syncro and when he sold it to me passed on all his invoices plus a lot of mainly UK road tests,  Australian brochures and an undated 4x4 Magazine Trakka road test. From Phil Lander's listing of VW Syncro road tests I assume it is the Mar 1990 test -( pages 90-93 if you want to fill in the page numbers Phil.) All the following prices are Australian Dollars.

In chronological sequence I have a round headlight 8/85 transporter and bus brochure which includes a syncro and on it I have written 1988 $32,000 -$42,000 Caravelle 4WD.

I have a 15 August 1988 Trakka price list which I think I obtained at the same time listing a Standard Bronco Conversion at $10,007 A Gold Bronco at $12,774
but then an additional range of accessories as follows:

Hot water tank & shower $895       Porta Potti  166    AM/FM Stereo 565
Roof Bed                         289       Orthopedic Front Seats    1829
style stripe                      195       airconditioning  2750 windcreen sunvisor 171
12/240v TV                       595      Trakka solar system    1474 reading light 79
tow bar & electrics           247        shade awning with track 189
side summer annex with track 403  rear door annex 315
free standing annex with  track 588

I have a VW retail price list effective Feb 3 1989 put out by Ateco Industries.
Some of the most relevant prices:
Kombi Panel Van     19,995      Caravelle GL             31,145
Kombi Van               22450       Caravelle Carat           TBA
Kombi deluxe van     25440       Kombi Syncro           32,450
Kombi Syncro deluxe 35,970     Caravelle Syncro       46,990
A Syncro therefore added around 10,000
It then has options listed
1. Clock & rear wiper 340  2. metallic paint 1850
3. camper conversion 10,007     4. Camper gold pak conversion 12,774
The latter 2 suggests I received this at the same time as the Trakka price list.

written in by hand is
 sincro(sic) dual cab  33995 and p/s(power steering?)diff lock 3000

The 4x4 road test's(1990?) only mention of price is " Our test vehicle 's Gold Pak conversion can be carried out by Trakka for $16,830 but there is a basic camper version for $10,870. Add the cost of the Kombi Syncro Deluxe at $36,310 and Trakka's Gold Pak conversion at $16830 and you're looking at over $53,000."  It previously mentioned a list of options but only prices the solar panel at around $1800. Clearly the pictures in the Trakka brochure in our photos is of a hamburger with the lot.My previous owner supplier me with an attractive subsequent 1990 Trakka brochure which I will add to the Trakka Bronco photo file. Interestingly in addition to the Trakka Elevating roof it has a picture of "Trakka optional aero Hitop.....the alternative for the long distance tourer having the convenience of permanent standing room and maximum storage without sacrificing drag" ie it is a fixed high top conversion and possibly  the reason why people  may have the impression that "Westies" came here. (I've never seen one on the road)

Finally I have the original contract  for the purchase of my vehicle dated 27/11/1992  for delivery Dec. 1992   (August 92 build date) It was $46,190 plus on road costs taking it to $47,871. That was for an empty deluxe syncro van with rear diff. lock and power steering. With the campervan fit out by a factory in W.A.(modelled I was told on the Westfalia), dual batteries, extra petrol tank, watertank and electric pump, fridge, microwave, set of VW 16" wheels and 16" heavy duty front springs, bull bar, VW rear wheel carrier modified for 2 spares, VDO Tacho, poptop, annexe, fiamma petrol and watertank locks, universal joint and fanbelt guards, blaupunkt radio, battery isolator, arm rests and door pockets, dashtop upgrade etc etc came to over $70,000!

Oils aint oils and syncros aint syncros.

Cheers
Roger

Subject: Re: [Syncro_T3_Australi a] Re: cost of syncro trakka

The 4x4 road test's(1990? ) only mention of price is " Our test vehicle 's Gold Pak conversion can be carried out by Trakka for $16,830 but there is a basic camper version for $10,870.

Cheers
Roger

Kevin and June,

There were never many Syncros imported and not many come onto the market now.  We have list members who have travelled the length and breadth of Australia to find one, so you might have to do the same.  The only one I know of at the moment is that of Brian Reed (list member in Victoria), who is selling an ex-Telecom Syncro.
